  • This is what I mean when I say “it’s amazing how much they bend over backwards to defend themselves”

Yeah, we don’t understand their culture. *rolleyes*

    Edit: Better example.

It can be used like '****' but that's not why Mexican soccer fans use it. Another good explanation. At a match depending upon whom you ask it's likely being said to convey 'coward', but it can be more derogatory as well - 'fag&ot' and the like, or male prostitute which doesn't sound as bad in English but means more in Spanish.

The problem is, and I actually don't buy the defense very much, is it can mean "f**. Whether they mean it in that context or not is immaterial, it still has a lot of anti-LGTBQ history behind that is offensive. And that's the major point:

            It's wrong to use it.
            It's offensive to use it.
They deserve the punishment for using it.

And they can take their "but that's not our meaning!" and "but our culture!" excuses and shove em.

            • Speaking of LGBTQ, I noticed on Saturday Neuer had a rainbow captain’s armband for the Germany game against Portugal. Thought it was cool, but really didn’t think much past that, especially since the US national teams have full pride kits.

Apparently it launched an investigation for political speech by UEFA, but will continue to be allowed as they are classifying it as a “symbol for diversity and therefore a good cause.”

Nothing new. US had the same thing happen in 2016 when Michael Bradley wore a rainbow captain armband in 2016 Copa America after the Orlando shooting.

                • I realize that globally the Gold Cup has nowhere near the prestige of UEFA Euro, but are there key European players sitting out their cup as Pulisic will be with the Gold?

The Gold Cup happens twice in the space of one Euro. If the Gold Cup happened every four years instead of every two there would be an argument. There is traditionally the “A Team” Gold Cup the year after the World Cup and the “B Team” Gold Cup the year before the World Cup. The USSF and Berhalter made it pretty clear six months ago none of the A Team players would be at the Gold Cup.

                      • Now that FIFA got rid of the Confederations Cup and there's no berth to win, the Gold Cup seems like an expedited version of the Nations League, although there's technically more games at the Gold Cup if you finish in the top four teams. Maybe it's more akin to conference play versus the NCAA tournament, since League B and C teams can qualify for the Gold Cup.

Also, Qatar is invited this year and 2023. Why are they coming back after the World Cup?

Technically there are FIFA Rankings points on the line.

True, Gold Cup is worth about twice as much as the Nations League. Speaking of which, the game against Martinique won’t even count for rankings since they’re not FIFA members, right?

AFAIK yes. Also true for their Nations League games as well (since they are in League A with the US as well)
