But for people who are locked up for felonies.

Plenty of people are locked up for misdemeanors, and they are eligible to vote.

That is true. Good point. (I know this firsthand from relatives) I revise and say it should be felonies.

And trust me I get that there are people that are convicted that shouldn't be, but that doesn't mean EVERYONE that is locked up needs to be treated like they are innocent. We limit plenty of rights for criminals I dont see a reason this shouldnt be one of them. I hold the right to vote very very high but if you are in prison you have forfeited that right. That is part of the debt you pay.

Felons should not be voting while in prison, sorry. If ensuring that Bernie Madoff, Ted Kaczynski, etc. never vote again means that all the other felons in prison can't vote either, than so be it.

Once they are out on probation, it's up for discussion.

It's logical fallacy, I know. But I don't particularly care either. Murderers, rapists, and fraudsters should not be voting from prison. Bite me.

I don't have data at hand to back up my thoughts here, but isn't a poor person quite a bit more likely to be charged with a crime than a wealthy person? And isn't that poor person less likely to be able to procure a good enough attorney to have a realistic chance of fighting the charges? And I don't know whether there even is data, but I've got a funny hunch that a poor person is less likely to get a suspended sentence than a wealthy person, as well as quite possibly less likely to be granted parole at a parole hearing. And really, if even one of those things is true, then stripping incarcerated prisoners of suffrage and restoring them the day they get out of prison seems like an unfairly greater burden on the poor.

Honestly, I'm not sure I have an opinion. I don't think I have a particular issue with stripping suffrage from prisoners, but I also think that if you do that, in order to be fair, it needs to apply to convicted felons serving parole and suspended sentences and similar as well.

And frankly, I'm not sure that I understand why allowing prisoners to vote is so crazy.

As for fines, taking away someone's suffrage because they can't pay a fine is some serious bs.
Well said, someone who gets caught with a dimebag (in some states you can go to jail for this) probably shouldn’t have their voting rights stripped.

Then change the sentencing laws. And yes, I know that's not going to happen in red states. So get off your arse and start the federal campaign.

Obviously that needs to happen too. But every universal program or right (universal healthcare for instance) is going to be given to some terrible people.

Rural whites are catching up in the prison population, particularly in bogus stuff like non-violent drug offenses, so bite Dump.
