Gab was the original safe space Twitter alternative for the far right. It died on the vine after the Pittsburgh synagogue shooter used it to signal his attack shortly before he murdered a bunch of people and was subsequently denied hosting services by mainstream web hosting platforms.

      • The idea of a "totally free space to share ideas without fear of suppression" sounds great, but it invariably ends up as naziville.

I don't personally like the various algorithms used by the big SM companies, but if the alternative is Parler or Gab, then I guess it is what it is.

It's not to "save the company". it's to provide it with some operating liquidity.

With the amount of outstanding shares these companies have been spending the last 20 years buying up so the CEO can keep getting huge bonuses, I think they can manage.

If they need to do it to save the company, one, I doubt they have many shareholders left, and two, no one's gonna buy it anyway. Unless it's someone like Bain, who'll squeeze every dollar out of it that they can before discarding the worthless husk. .

Right, when it comes to saving the company, that's for bonds. That's how Ford managed to survive in 2006/07 when they took out a multi billion dollar loan against the F150 and the Ford Oval.

Stock buy back by a company should be illegal, as all that does is prop up the price in a non-business manner- which helps the share holder. And a large amount of the high end shares are the BOD and the upper parts of corporations.

Bail outs because of external factors has it's place. But in this case, the economic problem isn't caused by some bad happening that some other economic sector forced (what happened in '08 to the auto makers) - this case is more a universal pause for some that can easily be taken up by the government via direct payments.

Directly pay people to stay home. Done. Keeps the bare minimum of the economy moving and people manage to eat and have a roof over their heads. That's how many of the EU did it.

Except that it is how it works because it already did I believe with Gab. Conservative Pols and "celebrities" frequented there up until the Pittsburgh Synagogue shooter posted stuff there about killing Jews then did it. The Cons needed to keep it alive fled back to Twitter. The crazies stayed until Parler.

Parler dies if the Pols and Influencers leave. The crazies won't be enough.

It also bans bots but it appears they are finding ways in. The Parler TOS is there to cya they hardly enforce anything. The best is the hashtag spamming.

I assumed (naively?) that bots were banned from all sites and by all providers. That bots are, by definition, vandalism if not breaking and entering.

Is this false? Are bots actually explicitly not banned by some SM sites and some ISPs?

I just assumed it was against the rules, if not actually illegal, to spam the internet.

                          • Well yeah...but for example on Twitter they need to be reported a certain number of times to be banned. The ability to sign up for an account is easy. Everything is fine until you get caught too many times. (much like here) It is passive resistance not active. Hell even after bots are caught en masse they often get to stick around because Twitter takes forever to look into reports and do purges. (cant speak for Facebook)

Parler IIRC was supposed to be much easier to get rid of them and I think was supposed to be actively moderating against them.

This country is more lawless now than it has been in my lifetime. And it isn't even close. If only the law and order politicians actually cared about making the most dangerous criminals follow the law. The people who have gotten rich violating labor, finance and environmental laws have done far more damage and hurt far more people than the people out there committing the typical rapes, murders, robberies and batteries.

The next time some law and order politician wants to put 100,000 more cops on the streets, I'll go along for the ride if the cops are the ones who work for the NLRB or EPA or FTC and they want to lock up some REAL criminals.
