Romney statement entered into the congressional record: "Like you, I hear many calls for unity. It is apparent that calling for unity while at the same time appeasing the big lie of a stolen election is a fraud ...It is in the service of that lie that a mob invaded the Capitol."
"It's as if the Drumpf Administration is made up of the worst and unfunny parts of the Cleveland Browns, Washington Generals, and the alien Mon-Stars from Space Jam."

"Scenes in "Empire Strikes Back" that take place on the tundra planet Hoth were shot on the present-day site of Ralph Engelstad Arena."

        • Yeah...its sad it takes a Senator who has almost zero chance of ever losing his seat (and even if he did he won't be out of work long) to tell the truth. Most likely he will be one of the last free thinking GOPers standing...

The issue with Sen. Romney speaking out on various subjects is that he cowers and retracts to the king makers. Look at his history - calls out Never Trump, and then he's in a meeting with him, licking Trump's boots. It's his pattern, the pattern of a political coward.

I cannot think of a single Republican currently in elected office who has consistently stood up to the Trump faction of the party. The vast majority of them fell in line and clamed up as soon as he became the 2016 nominee. Others, like Graham, were eventually blackmailed into toeing the line. Still others, like Mittens, have at various times tried to play both sides of the fence.

                • We have to take the small victories when we can get them. No one is saying Mitt is some freedom fighter but come on. We demand people say something, they do, and then we talk about how it doesn't mean anything and so on. With standards like that nothing anyone does short of shooting Trump will be enough.

Its like when people demand an apology from a celebrity, the celebrity apologizes, and then the same people talk about how they only did it because they had to and it doesn't matter. Well then why demand it in the first place?

                    1. Bank the victory
                    2. Immediately relaunch a new demand
                    3. Keep the pressure on

I learned that from the Right.

                      • Speaking of the counter-majoritarian voice, do any of you post regularly on a decidedly right wing site? I'm thinking of a minority view role such as Hovey takes on here. No point intended; I've just wondered about it from time to time, and this discussion triggered the thought.

And I"m not talking about pure trolling.

Romney could definitely lose a primary. something like 64% of Republicans in Utah disapprove of him. The Mormons were trump skeptics in 2016, but now they're fully on the Trump Train.

                            What would be the point?

Sadly, while both sides are guilty of mal intent from time to time, the right today is nothing like the left, and certainly not in a place like this. When Hovey posts something that is intelligent and on the mark, people here respond with intelligent replies of their own, sometimes in agreement, or sometimes pointing out an alternative aspect. Even when he disagrees with something fundamentally he sometimes offers a well-reasoned reply. It is often the kind of discourse that is sadly lacking in 99% of the rest of the world. On some right wing site, a progressive voice will be shouted down as fake news, America-hating, socialism or some such nonsense. There is no more rational discourse to be had with at least a third of this country and likely closer to 40%. Fvck them. When they want to behave as though facts matter and we all share just one set of them, then maybe discourse will amount to more than "you want the terrorists to win." Hovey actually is the exception that proves the rule the right can mostly go fvck themselves.

Yeah my facebook friends pretty much qualifies. Grew up in Minneapolis in the 80s and feels like 90% of my 50 yo friends are on Trumps side.

Sorta, not really. I'm part of a car enthusiast board where there's a pretty strong underlying support of dumpy- some who though the 1/6 event was justified as being patriotic, since the courts "through out the evidence."

But there is almost no real political talk there as the owners of the site don't let it happen. It went on for a while, but the discussions got to heated, and they stopped.

One interesting trend on this board is that it has slid very left- I remember having some "discussions" with right wing people who just denied reality. They lived in a world where it was ok to not only give tax breaks to huge corporations, it was ok to give them money to do their work. BUT it was the worst thing in the world to give the same money to the poor. And we know the hatred that went with the ACA.

It's not as if this is a board that shuts discussions down (well, there is the ban hammer)- so it's interesting that the trend went left. Especially during the dumpy period. And I know 100% there are a TON of dumpy worshipers in the hockey thread- they just refused to engage and try to justify their position. Some "moral" ones just gave up. Seems like a big one that made them shut down was the whole caging of kids.
