    • So, the last booster I got was in September that (I believe) was that new one to protect you against variants. Is there going to be a time to get another one?

Saw on the news this morning that the positivity rate in MA is 12.25% Greeeeaaat.

      • Since we got COVID in September, we have been waiting to get the booster until roughly now. Maybe good timing?

And on kind of a scary note- long covid is still a pretty nasty problem, apparently. One of the U of Tubes channels I watch, the creator just posted that they are still suffering badly from long COVID, 6 months post infection. And I'm sure vaccination was part of the equation. Yikes.

        • No, you can still get long covid even if you are vaccinated is the way I read it. The vaccination is the same as the flu vaccine. It will keep you alive. It will keep your lungs from filling up. But, it can't do much else. Too much variance going on.

yeah, I misread and deleted. And I thought that was always understood. It's not a bulletproof vest. But studies show that it does potentially help reduce the likelihood of getting it and potentially improve the recovery chances.

No, people do not understand it. My anti-covid vax neighbor looked me right in the eye and said the vaccination doesn't do a damm thing. I had the gall to say it did something.

We are almost certain to have yearly updated boosters, like with flu shots. Hopefully efficacy is better with the covid boosters.

I would be surprised if we were catching more than 5-10% of cases. Between home tests, people not caring and Covid mixing in with a bunch of other bugs, we just aren't testing enough to get the full picture.

That said, it's probably ok unless a new variant that comes out that's as infectious as Omicron but has increased severity. At that point, it might ultimately be a new virus altogether, but I'm not a virologist.

I also caught covid in September, and got the booster in late december (about 90 days later). Go get it!

As others have said, my reading is that boosters/vaccines protect you very well from serious illness and death, and do offer some pretty damn good short term prophylactic immunity, however since Omicron it's just so infectious that it simply doesn't take much virus ... juice... to infect a person. I also read that instances of long covid are much lower among those who have up-to-date vaccinations (3 doses of OG series plus booster).

                    • We have appts for the update, but my vaccine question is more about the new variant than long covid.

if this is another BA version, it seems the BA booster would help.

                      • I think we're on to like XBB.1.5 or something? We're far beyond the BA-family of subvariants.

Yeah, I ended up with long COVID 11 months ago, maybe a month after my most recent shot.

I just got the bivalent booster about 3 weeks ago, so I’m hoping to avoid too many harsh complications should I catch a current variant. .
