  • Just received our OSHA requirement from HR for Covid. Must show proof of vaccination or negative test, blah blah blah. I think the Supreme's are working on that so it may go away. Was on the phone just when I got that email with the smartest co-worker I've ever worked with. He of course is not vaccinated.

Go figure. Tried, nicely to talk about it with him and convince him why he should get vaccinated. No pushing. I doubt I convinced him of anything.
**NOTE: The misleading post above was brought to you by Reynold's Wrap and American Steeples, makers of Crosses.

I'm actually much happier than when I was expected to circulate.

But (1) I don't expect everyone to live like this, (2) I was never big on other humans, and (3) I am old enough to have everything I need. I don't have to go out of the house to find love or company. If I was alone I would risk going out.
I'm sort of similar to Handy. I work from home so other than the store, I don't go out much. However, I am playing a show on friday (pending cancelation) and we have 185 pre-sales already (holy ****, I can't believe that many people are paying ahead of time to see my tribute band play...). I am just going to assume I'm catching covid at the show, but I will trust that the vaccines work and that I will have minor symptoms at worst. I'm lucky in that I can just continue to stay home for the week after and I have plenty of tests in case I need them (I'll test Tuesdayish anyway). I've been very careful going out. While I've eaten in plenty of restaurants, I'm careful to do so only when I won't be seeing anyone for days after. I've been to see other live bands play (and, naturally, caught a non-Covid cold from one back in October), but again I make sure to avoid plans for the week after.

I wouldn't call myself "Vaxxed and done" by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm fortunate to be in a position where I can very easily shelter in place if necessary without negatively impacting my income, and hopefully if/when I do catch Covid the transmission ends with me.

      • I am pretty much in the VAD camp, with a few reservations. I have worked 100% remotely since the start of all this, and I changed firms in part because I felt my new, much smaller firm would be back to on-site visits sooner than my former megafirm. I want to actually work with my clients in-person again, whenever they are ready to do so. I realize that some will probably never be ready and consider this change to their working relationship with consultants to be permanent, especially now that they haven't had to pay our travel expenses in almost 2 years. That's their choice, and for some projects it does work, but I feel a lot more gets accomplished in-person, even if it's just the first 1-2 weeks of kickoff and initial workshops to do planning and gather the requirements. I think eventually a majority of clients will see that and want us visiting again. I am burned out on Zoom, Teams, WebEx etc. and I haven't turned my camera on in months except for the rare occasion that I am obligated to. I am triple jabbed, so I no longer wear a mask unless a particular business requires it and/or still posts "Please Wear a Mask" on the front door (only because I'm not an a55hole). As I see it, I have done my part and unless the next mutation substantially increases the odds of death, I'm not going to be a COVID worrywart. If you are eligible then get your shots or risk suffering the consequences of your actions, because I am no longer going to inconvenience myself or go out of my way to protect you.

One comment I saw somewhere was "I love that these morons are literally - literally - one step away from saying 'eat **** to own the libs.'"

If I didn't know that this ******* was for real, I'd swear this was all some crazy Russian astro-turn disinformation campaign.

I don't know, phisiologically, if you can be infected with two strains/variants of the same virus at the same time. Perhaps one of our clinical folks might know?

It could be a lab error, as no one else is reporting it and several are pointing out methodological flaws. It could be a person who was infected with both at the same time and they mutated together, but usually mutations come from a single virus and follow a single lineage.

A new variant with the infectiousness of omicron but the severity of Delta/previous would be... bad...
Yes, it's possible to be infected with both at the same time. From the prestigious journal, NBCChicago:

"In theory, yes, it’s called a 'super-infection,'" Pablo Penaloza-MacMaster, assistant professor of microbiology-immunology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, said. “We see that with viruses like HIV, in which a person can get co-infected with two viral strains at once. In this scenario, viral recombination may occur, potentially resulting in hybrid variants. Thus, getting boosted is becoming increasingly important not only to prevent transmission, but also to mitigate further evolution of the virus by genetic recombination.”

In July, a report from researchers in Belgium highlighted a coronavirus case where a woman was infected with two variants simultaneously. Experts said at the time it was one of the first documented cases of finding two variants in the same person at the same time.
                ...
In January, scientists in Brazil also reported two cases of co-infection.

This is me. I can't work remotely, but if I'm not at work, I'm at home. I mean, that's me pretty much normally, but I have no interest in travelling, shopping, eating out, going to a movie, anything that involves comingling with people until this is over.

I'll stay home, play my records, watch the tube, ride my bike, perfectly content.

The virus has to work extra hard to keep getting more members of a dwindling population ill, but it has been able to because the unvaxxed are sitting ducks.
And Omicron is so friggin' contagious. The percentage of unvaccinated getting sick enough to be hospitalized or die may not be a large, but the numbers still are just by the sheer amount of people getting sick.

At this point it's 50/50 whether everything the Republicans do isn't Russian agitprop. Dump is under the oligarchs' thumb so that checks. The NRA was a Russian scam by the end, and OAN is still.
