Let’s start with some basics. Vermont and South Dakota share several important similarities. Both have relatively White, older and rural populations. They have comparable median incomes. Both states have Republican governors, challenging the simplistic notion that covid risk is a partisan phenomenon.

But this is where the similarity ends. While nearly 75 percent of Vermonters have had at least one vaccine shot, putting the state near the threshold for herd immunity, only half of South Dakotans have had at least one shot. South Dakota’s substantial population immunity instead comes in large part from prior infections, particularly during the fall. This massive surge in infections was driven by the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in August that brought nearly half a million people to South Dakota, sparking outbreaks across that state and, indeed, the nation. With little to no interest on the part of its governor to squelch the outbreak, South Dakota reached the highest levels of infection seen by any state during the pandemic. At its peak, the state was reporting more than 160 new cases per 100,000 residents. Vermont, in comparison, never climbed above 30 cases per 100,000.

Unsurprisingly, these states experienced stunningly different outcomes. Adjusted for population, nearly six times as many people died in South Dakota from covid-19 as in Vermont (230 per 100,000 in South Dakota compared to just 40 per 100,000 in Vermont). In real numbers, while about 250 Vermont residents died from the disease, more than 2,000 South Dakotans died. And as of today, Vermont has a lower unemployment rate, suggesting that there need not be any trade-off between public health and the economy.

      • This is straight up going to become a Red State problem by Spring of 2022. We aint gonna see any restrictions this Fall/Winter, so Darwin is gonna have a hanging curve served up to him. Major tourist areas like Myrtle Beach, Orlando, Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge are gonna see a downturn when the kill off their clientele and smart people do what MichVandal has stated and just choose to do things that don't spread the plague.

Agreed. I really want to go to Vegas but looking at the situation ... I think I'll hold off and go someplace more local.

It's funny. It's almost as if when you take a deadly pandemic seriously, you have a better outcome and have a shorter timeline. Who knew?

It's still not going to matter until it hits young adults and kids hard. It does no good to kill off old Nazis, they have already done their demographic damage. For a bug to be a godsend it has to start working its way through their granddaughters before they've had a chance to pull a train in the Winn-Dixie parking lot behind the dumpster during 5th grade recess.

            • I'm actually headed to Vegas in a couple weeks. As of now I am not too worried but that is about as risky as I will go even being fully vaxxed.

              • All well and fine, but we've told very clearly to not worry about either Dakota state. Remember? They are not our problem to care about, according to people who live there- killing their own citizens from a preventable problem is not only ok, but probably wanted.

(what's amazing about their numbers is that they are naturally socially distant, and yet have demonstrated that it's a poor excuse for doing nothing)

I think we are past that point now. The amount of states below 50% (hell 40%!) there is no going back. Either people get vaccinated or we get more stories in the media of idiots who regret not getting the vaccine. There is no more midground.

Problem is, not everyone who's gonna die from this are registered Republicans. The virus doesn't care about your party affiliation.

Lots of poor blacks and Hispanics living in those states have been just as hesitant to get vaccinated as the die-hard Trump-humpers, whether its lack of access, or fears of the vaccine itself.

I understand the sentiment, but there truly are some people out there who deserve to die from this thing.

And I'm not gonna feel the least bit sorry for them.

                              • USA Today fact checking doesn't seem to agree with the Post's "massive surge" statement in the article.

South Dakota confirmed 124 COVID-19 cases tied to the Sturgis Rally as of Sept. 8, and other states have reported at least 290 people in 12 states testing positive after attending the rally. About 460,000 people attended the rally. The infection rate based on the above numbers is 0.09%, ...
