From L.I., the tiering for a straight-A student is:
1. Try HYP. (Exception: grades unimportant if you are a rich enough legacy).
2. If you don't get into 1 then you try Cornell, Columbia (if you're Jewish), Penn (black), Dartmouth (rich), or Brown (hippie and/or negligent parents).
3. If you don't get into 2 then you try NYU, Syracuse, BU, St. Johns (Catholic), Fordham (Jewish), the SUNY system (except Stony Brook unless you're a stoner).
4. If you don't get into 3, welp, take a deep breath... Exhale... Good. Then try Hofstra, the SCNY system (state colleges as opposed to state universities... life is getting pretty earnest), a buncha places in NJ. God, maybe Lehigh. Bucknell or Colgate if you have the money.
5. Still no? Welcome to Greendale.
For STEM:
1. MIT.
2. Princeton or Cornell.
3. There's always barber college.
