  • I did notice that I'm not having the Twitter issue I was having a few weeks back - that when you clicked on a link to go to Twitter, you got a "Try Again" message. Glad that issue got resolved, not sure if it resolved itself or not. There are so many other issues to fix, I can't see why that would take precedence.

I think this is actually a Twitter issue, as I get the same error with the one other message board I frequent as well as from FB (when I bother to use that).

        It gets worse...

After the format change, I avoided logging-in mainly due to the “first unread post” no longer functioning. I typically access the forum from a mobile device, and found it better to stay in lurk-mode (signed-out) and hit the small purple circle with inverted triangles adjacent to the thread title which would take me to the first unread post... but this only worked when signed-out.

Since I posted a few times recently, I decided to stay signed-in. Been signed-in for a few days, and yesterday I noticed that a few threads were not appearing in the list of threads... specifically the POTUS, Congress, and Music threads. This was observed because on the main forum page, it stated that the last post to the Cafe was made in the POTUS thread, but when I went to the Cafe that POTUS thread was not there... not at the “top” (where the thread with the most-recent activity should be), and I looked up to 5 pages ‘back’ but it was nowhere to be found.

So I logged-out, and the POTUS thread magically-appeared! Not sure why it was not available while signed-in, but I may have hit the “mark this thread as read” button within this thread... I do not specifically recall doing so, but it’s possible, so that might have something to do with it.

Lessons learned... sign-out and browse in lurk-mode on a mobile device, and all threads will be available, and that purple circle with inverted triangles next to the thread title will take you to the first unread post (provided that your cookies aren’t cleared).

        Cheers!!!

In the past if I subscribed to a thread it would unsubscribe me any time I viewed it on my mobile. Also if you have blocked someone it will either not show if they are the only comment or it will tell you that you don't have permission if they weren't the only one who posted.

Not sure it would matter anyways. No one is paying attention anymore. I filed a ticket like day 2 of the new board and they still havent looked at it. The fake email I got from Tim Brule though was a nice touch.

The problem is that any migration or upgrade takes hours and hours because of how many posts we have. It took something like 18 hours with the move from vBulletin 4 to 5. One I'm looking at that seems to perform much better is XenForo. None of us at USCHO is anywhere close to a full-time employee, so time definitely is an issue.

As far as spam, our primary moderator has taken seriously ill and has been hospitalized for a week, so spam hasn't been addressed. I just logged in as the mysterious Board and cleaned some up. I'll try to keep on top of it in the interim.

About the ads: we're trying to make up for some lost revenue. The pandemic lost our main site our two biggest months last season – essentially about 40% of our annual cashflow – and we're off to a slow start this year.

If anyone wants to reach me directly, you can email me at USCHO at ed.trefzger@uscho.com

                  • I hope whoever is the moderator recovers fully, and soon! I honestly appreciate the (likely unpaid) work by all who run the place.

I will reiterate though - where is the REPORT function? I'm not even talking about for the obvious trolls, but for the spam and for racism or worse.

                    • Xenforo is much better than vBulletin. They switched to that on another board I frequent and it took all of about 2 days for the whining about the change to disappear. It also gives the moderators much better options for dealing with people. Different moderators for each section, people thread banned instead of generic banned. Things run smooth as hell and they have way more users, way more boards, way more threads and they allow everything from videos to pictures with little to no slow down.

                        • I dont know if anyone has asked/answered this yet, but I recall on the old board you could change your username (maybe it was only allowed once?). Is that still a thing and if so how does one go about that? I can't seem to find it.

                          • You have to submit an email/contact the board admins to make that request. They used to be good with it when there were more around, not sure about currently. Good luck with that.
