  • So, ... you're dead.

So, you're dead, murdered. OK, not really, but the "you" that is a character in your favorite cop television series is.

Pick the television police detective you'd want on the case to solve your murder. And if you prefer, list your top 3 or 5 choices.

        Sherlock Holmes.

BBC version or the American version which is the show Elementary.

Jonathan Hart. He figured out how to kill someone and get away with it. He knows all the tricks.
That community is already in the process of dissolution where each man begins to eye his neighbor as a possible enemy, where non-conformity with the accepted creed, political as well as religious, is a mark of disaffection; where denunciation, without specification or backing, takes the place of evidence; where orthodoxy chokes freedom of dissent; where faith in the eventual supremacy of reason has become so timid that we dare not enter our convictions in the open lists, to win or lose.

Not exactly police detective, but Raymond Reddington.

              5. Det. John Munch, Baltimore PD (Homicide, Life on the Streets), NYPD (Law & Order SVU). The man loves a good conspiracy theory.

              4. Det. Kate Beckett, NYPD (Castle). Why? Kate Beckett (or is it Nikki Heat?). And she can put up with Castle.

              3. Det. Frank Pembleton, Baltimore PD (Homicide, Life on the Street). Pembleton and that show was great.

              2. Det. Lennie Briscos, NYPD (Law & Order). Cynical curmudgeon, and if he "was kidding you he'd be wearing a fez, and no pants."

              1. Lt. Louie Provenza, Priority Homicide Division, LAPD (The Closer, Major Crimes). The only one yet to out curmudgeon Lenny Briscoe.

Hall of Fame: Lt. Frank Columbo. (Columbo) Enough said. .... No, wait, just one more t'ing ... < crusty cigar gesture here >

And before you ask, a few friends consumed a few beverages around a campfire on this subject over the weekend.

Is Holmes on Elementary really a cop?

If not, wrong thread. Start your own "which TV detective".

And Jonathan Hart wasn't a cop. Sorry SJ.

Works for the police dept. Holmes on BBC worked with Scotland Yard. Same thing. Love the Provenza choice. One of my favorite TV characters of all time.

Apologies SJ. I missed that initially.

Assuming I can watch the investigation and take in their beauty from on high I vote Beth Davis from Stalker or Stella Bonasera from CSI:NY.
