    • I picked up a collection of short mystery fiction by Cornell Woolrich and love it so far. Death Escapes the Eye is a perfect story.

      • I'm early into reading Enchantments, by Kathryn Harrison. The narrator is the 18-year-old daughter of Rasputin, and the book begins immediately following his death when she and her younger sister are taken in by the Czar and his wife before his abdication. My first read of Harrison. She's a superb writer. The following is Masha's own reflection of how she is dealing with her father's death:

In truth, I couldn't think of any but one thing, my mind prodding and poking, tonguelike, at the absence of my father, pressing up against what was no longer
there and trying to measure the loss.

        Good stuff.

          • Following the whole Brandon Sanderson Kickstarter campaign has been interesting.

There's been the inevitable backlashes and backlashes to the backlashes. But $22 million and counting in less than a week is kinda amazing regardless, even for someone as prolific an author as he is. I read one article that this still might mean he gets less money than if he just got them published traditionally, given that he's taking on all of the expenses, too.

Haven't decided if I'm going to jump in or not. Would only buy the books themselves, not the extras. But while I enjoy most of his stuff, there are some I can't get into. And I always worry about the editing in a self published book like this, even if he is likely to hire editors.

            • I have many conflicting thoughts about Sanderson. I think self publishing his books will turn out fine. I don't think he is that good of a writer, but his books are always good enough. If that makes sense.

He's a good world builder and his magic systems are normally well thought out. I love the original Mistborn trilogy. But yeah, I understand he's not winning a Nobel for literature.

                    • Oh yes, everyone praised this book (Fifty Shades) so much but when I read it I was very disappointed. In general, I love reading books. It's quite interesting for me. I work and study a lot and want to have more time for books, so I try this for help with studying. Сan anyone recommend some good novel and adventure book?

                              • Just finished the Autobiography of Malcolm X as told to Alex Haley. Incredible book! Malcolm was a genius. Spoilers alert for those who haven’t read it:

towards the end Malcolm realizes certain events or occurrences happening to him are beyond the capabilities of the NOI. Little did he know that the year prior to his death his file at CIA was delivered to Richard Helms the Director of Plans ( the directorate of plans from 1947 through at least the early 80’s, was the offense at CIA, the coup plotting, election rigging, Assassinations teams were directed out of this department). Make of that what you will. I know what I believe happened at the Audobon ballroom. Also great supplemental reading: “The Murder and Martyrdom of Malcolm X” by James Douglass

also just finished “The Betrayal of Anne Frank”. Man…it’s absolutely riveting and gutting to read this. I believe the team found the person who gave up the location but it’s just…Gutting. That’s the only way for me to describe it.

And if I haven’t mentioned it here before, Killers Of The Flower Moon by David Grann is a great and quick read. Scorsese has a movie based on the real life events described in this book that is coming out this fall. Osage is ndian tribe pushed to to the brink, into no-man’s land in Oklahoma and then…they discover oil. And one by one they begin to disappear or are found murdered. This really is a rough equivalent to another story that needs to be told on the big screen which is the Tulsa massacre (black Wall Street).
