Precisely. Also, no one eats Hot Pockets with ketchup or (*grumble*) gravy.

Typically, when we travel, we try any local specialties that sound intriguing.

Been from one end of the U.P. to the other over the years and have yet to try a pastie.

Anyone been to St. Martin/St. Maarten? The wife and I are making a trip there for a long weekend in November. We have our flights and hotel planned but the rest is still up in the air.

          You could do this...

If you notice, there is a bar to the right, down the beach where you can watch the planes come in about 50 feet (if that) over the beach. Was definitely hoping to do that if we went there.

My boys would have gotten a kick out of it.

'Course I'd have crapped myself when this happened...

Yes, I am going myself next month.

The #1 thing to do there IMO is Maho Beach, which is right at the end of the runway at the airport. The big jets come in low overhead.. pretty unique experience. Also when they take off you can stand at the fence and get the jetwash/sand effect. I'm a bit of an airplane nut so I love that. The beach bar there posts scheduled arrivals. http://www.paradise-islands.org/st-m...maho-beach.jpg

Grand Case is where the good food is. Some of the restaurants will have beachfront dining in the back, or even on-the-sand seating. You will need a car to get there, and more or less need a car to get anywhere.

Orient Beach on the east side is a nice expansive beach where you will find some peace and quiet but also some tourist infrastructure - restaurants, jetski rentals, etc. I believe it's tops-optional.

There are casinos too if that's your style.

Philipsburg is the main town but it is mostly for cruise ship daytrippers.

You can take a day trip over to Anguilla as well, that is a cool little trip. Anguilla is pretty exclusive and its beaches are pristine and generally quiet. It is British so you will need your passport. Fun fact: on Anguilla they drive on the left but use left-hand drive cars like in the US, so driving is trippy.

I love pasties, they are the real deal. Definitely try them. Hot pockets are not a reasonable alternative. It's like ice cream vs flavored chipped ice. not the same. BTW you can get them flown in from a place in Calumet which I forgot the name of.

I happen to know that some pilots purposefully run the engines up higher than normal in order to blow people off that fence. I personally try to avoid those type destinations during hurricane season, but that's just me.

I'm going to Costa Mesa for a weekend next month, had a nice trip to Edinburgh for the fringe last week,( which was GREAT) and will try to go to Lisbon before it get's cold. Though I really want to get to Basel for the Basel indoors' before Fed retires,( though my Gf doesn't like tennis and she wants to go to Mendicino instead.)

Also working on a trip to Poland for next summer.
Anyone going to europe this next few weeks... there are a number of firms that are pulling employees out of there due to the possibility/ probability of the Iceland volcanos going off again.

In reality, pasties are the blandest food I have ever had. They are nutritional substance and that is it (and that their original purpose).
Never really developed a taste for tequila. Kind of hard to understand how you make a drink out of something that sharp, inhospitable. Now, bourbon is easy to understand.

If you use "bland" to describe pasties, you are not looking at the bigger picture.

We're going to be staying in Grand Case, supposedly (it's hard to find precise locations, it seems) within walking distance of the restaurants, but I think we'll probably rent a car regardless because it seems to be very cheap.

Anguilla seems like it would be a cool trip but I'm not sure it'd necessary be worth the time commitment for, basically, just the novelty factor of it.

My bet on the answer to the first question would be an airplane.
