We've already got quite a few things on our to-do/to-eat list while we're there, but I was hoping to reach out to the forum and see what they thought. Bonus points for anyone who has good ideas of places to stop on the Lake Michigan side of the UP while we're driving there and back.
I recall liking the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. (West of Traverse City) The "Dune Climb" might appeal to a young family.

I presume the cherry crop is still in season in Traverse City. Apparently that area has the ideal climate for growing cherries. Don't know the exact reason; I suppose it must have something to do with the lake providing extra moisture and/or moderating temperatures. In any event, try some of the local produce. I bought some from a roadside stand and was really impressed.

Can't compete for the bonus points. I actually did make the Escanaba/St. Ignace run once, but it's just been too long to remember where we stopped...

as a Traverse City girl, I can give some advice. definitely the Sleeping Bear Dunes. visit Glen Arbor. Art's Tavern for burgers and Boone's for a nicer dinner. Cherry Republic is a must do for all things Cherry. and then some. if you are feeling generous, stop in at Becky Thatcher's and get the Mrs. something nice. her pieces are really exquisite and often locally oriented. (lake bubble rings for instance or pine cone earrings, etc). (huskyfan flashes her engagement ring). are you going up M-22 to Northport? if so stop in Leland and visit fishtown. smoked whitefish right off the boats. cute shops. children's toys and clothes and things. stop by the outdoor bar by the river (forgotten the name) and have a "Chubby Mary" - a bloody mary with a smoked chub in place of a celery stick. Leland also has a small but nice independent bookstore. Fischer's Happy Hour Tavern at Gill's Pier is the place for burgers, homemade soups and pies and broasted chicken. Sutton's Bay.has.everything. an astronaut lives there. Madonna's dad's winery. nearby casino. an independent theatre. Scandinavian furniture. its a little too too for my style but hey, its vacation and let the Mrs. shop because its a long 30 minute drive to Traverse City before she can shop again in even pricier shops. La Amical downtown French bistro is the bomb for lunch and dinner. Poppycock's is good too. the bar at the top of the historic Park Place hotel has a great view. downtown TC has everything you ever needed in the way of green organic local and expensive. visit the State theatre owned by Michael Moore. the drive up Old Mission peninsula to the lighthouse is beautiful. stop at the local wineries to sample the goods. Omelette Shoppe for breakfast. Elk Rapids (Pearl's for Creole food), Charlevoix, Petoskey, Harbor Springs. more more more. and everywhere beautiful white sand beaches. stop at the beach along the northernmost end of Lake Michigan outside of St Ignace. its one of the most beautiful in the state. watch for riptides though. its a, um, well, its a loong drive from Mackinaw City to Green Bay. get some burgers and fries at Clyde's and settle in for the drive. try some pasties. bang your head against the car window. its a long drive. hope the weather is nice. the area is beautiful.

Retail? Restaurant? Both? I do know of their catalogue.

...the drive up Old Mission peninsula to the lighthouse is beautiful.
Did that; EoDS & Family should too.
              ...Charlevoix, Petoskey...
Can vouch for both those towns.

              ...try some pasties...
Most on the thread already know, but for the uninitiated: Think of a beef pot pie served as a sandwich. Oh, and it's pronounced like "past tense," not like the adhesive.
...its a long drive...the area is beautiful.
True & True. Thanks for a very informative post. Made me want to get back to the area soon and try some of your recommendations.

                1. Go to grocery store.
                2. Buy Hot Pockets.
                3. Remove HP from packaging.
                4. Give it to friend, and call it a "pastie."
                5. ....

Never really developed a taste for tequila. Kind of hard to understand how you make a drink out of something that sharp, inhospitable. Now, bourbon is easy to understand.

Not trolling. Pasties are Hot Pockets. Except HP actually do have more flavor, even if less healthy for you.

But if we're being serious, this is clearly the bottom line.

And even if you subscribe to Brent's poor Hot Pocket theory, wouldn't Hot Pockets be pasties, and not the other way around? Pasties have been around around alot longer than Hot Pockets.

Hot Pockets are the frozen, greasy, disgusting, mass-produced version of handheld meat pies. They are not pasties.

The added grease is the added flavor. Otherwise, the standard Hot Pocket is a pastry stuffed with meats, cheeses, veggies, and served hot. How is that not a pasty?

Pasties are like a good handmade pizzeria pizza. Hot Pockets are Jack's frozen pizza.

Besides, the crusts are different. Hot pockets have a more pizza-like calzone-esk crust, and pasties are more light and flaky.
