  • I have no idea where to put this, so I'll stick it here.

Today was one of the most rewarding days in my career.

Completed the first phase of start up for a new lab scale R&D system, the core technology has never before been used at our company plus it's in a hazardous occupancy area. Just an incredible symphony of unit ops and machines working together all in the name of chemistry. Five PhD researchers and about a dozen engineers across EE, ChEn, CSci, Mech worked on this for a little over two years.

It'a going to be an absolute game changer for our research lab. I had no idea what to expect but even the OEM rep were excited to see it start up.

      Congratulations!
If you don't change the world today, how can it be any better tomorrow?

You broke new ground without burning down the building or ripping a hole in the Space/Time Continuum =)

              • Thanks all

They'd be pizzed if I burned the building down. We just finished construction. I was project lead on the process equipment.

I commented to one of the newer researchers, "You're working mostly on Reactor XYZ, right? That puts out product we put in New System ABC? Going to be real fun when we scale them up and bolt them together in a few years."

(Assuming my boss's boss doesn't murder me for forcing him to ask for an extra couple 100k in overages after he said no on a different project. Plant says go faster, I said I need more money, he said no I need to bid everything. Sorry, can't do both. He doesn't know this yet. Trying to find an out by funding a separate project with extra scope and my looming overages.)

Very impressed, dx. A reminder that many of us are entrusted with real responsibilities IRL, which is terrifying. ;-)

Yeah, it's amazing sometimes. I don't know what I've done to earn the trust. Sometimes it's just being in the wrong place at the right time.

And having a boss who understands nothing goes as planned and what's important is to learn. He has never held mistakes against anyone (unless you **** him over, but then you kind of deserve it). Everything is a learning opportunity. He does a great job helping shield us worker bees from management. Helps to know where the bodies are buried I suppose.
