To me, this does not look like the beginning of the end of the standard model - just a need for further extension/refinement as has happened dozens of times in the last 50 years.

Did I mention that I'm not a physicist?
    Long live the standard model?

Look, all I'm saying is that you don't get to be the King for 50 years without knowing how to co-opt a few naysayers along the way. "Yeah, that's always been part of me, too!"

If you don't change the world today, how can it be any better tomorrow?

The worst thing that's gonna happen to the SM is a tweak. The worst thing that happened to Newton was being reduced to local space and time you can pretend is absolute. My understanding is Leibnitz even saw that coming but they just didn't have the math or physics furniture to deal with it for 200 years.

A third line of attack offered by Leibniz against the Newtonian conception of space and time draws on another principle familiar from Leibniz’s metaphysics, namely, the Principle of the Identity of Indiscernibles (PII). In the present context we may understand the PII as ruling out the possibility of two things being distinct, but not distinct in virtue of some discernible property. It thus suggests that where we cannot identify a recognizable difference between two things or possibilities, those two are in fact only one – that is, as Leibniz puts it, that “To suppose two things indiscernible, is to suppose the same thing under two names” (Fourth Paper, paragraph 6; G VII.372/Alexander 37). Armed with the PII, Leibniz argues once again that the apparent possibility of absolute space and time can be undermined. For on the supposition of absolute space, the world oriented in one way with respect to space would have to be a distinct possibility from the world oriented in another way with respect to absolute space. But, according to Leibniz, two such purported possibilities would be indiscernible since no being – not even God or an angel – could recognize any difference between them. Leibniz thus concludes that since the supposition of absolute space leads to a violation of the PII, the supposition itself must be rejected. By essentially the same reasoning, Leibniz argues similarly that the apparent possibility of absolute time is also inconsistent with the PII and so too must be rejected as chimerical or confused.
        That's relativity, in 1717!

The point is the SM is likely already pregnant with these possibilities, and the next few centuries are midwifing what pops out.

        • Croatoan mystery may be solved.

tl; dr: They went to Hatteras island and made hot monkey love with the injuns. Which is really funny because Virginia Dare is a keystone for up market white supremacists, and it turns out she was probably taking red cock. By choice.

          • Uhh, Kep? Wasn't Virginia Dare, like, 1-2 years old when the colony disappeared? Ewww.

Now Eleanor (Virginia's mother) on the other hand...

              Um. People grow up.

The point is the High Brow Klansmen who like to brandish Virginia as the emblem of white sainthood and why we should kick the Muzzies out (for, reasons?) never considered the obvious: that people are people and the colony merely assimilated into the native culture, probably taught them a few things, learned 100x more, left the Christian BS to rot, and got down to the basic human business of getting down.

The fact that LD2 is fairly new to the inner reaches of the solar system suggests that it’s made of relatively pristine material that has been in the back of the solar system’s freezer for billions of years, unaltered by heat from the sun. That would make it a time capsule of the early solar system. Studying its composition could help planetary scientists learn what the first planets were made of.

Watching the DNC gave me that tiny glimmer of hope. I just felt like as dark as it’s getting and will continue to get, we have room to hope for the future.

And I didn’t realize just how devoid of hope I’d been the last several months. It hit me like a pallet of uranium. Very emotional.
