or they will have to go through trial, and have their entire sexual history examined, and run the risk that someone on the jury thinks she brought it on herself because of the way she was dressed.

I don't think Timothy is being deliberately cruel or heartless. His argument does make logical sense provided you have never set foot in the real world. I don't mean that to be snarky (although, being me, I'm sure I made it so just by breathing on it). There are a lot of ideas which are beautiful on paper but which thus far at least have proven to be chimerical in the dirty world of real human behavior. Pure pacifism. Communism. Trickle down. His argument that women bear responsibility for not ending the cycle of abuse because they don't simply "do the right thing" is a little like saying a domestic violence victim should "just leave" or the poor should "just get a job." There are laboratory conditions in which the equations have been so simplified, and the assumptions of frictionless surfaces and infinitely taut clothelines are so constructed that the statement appears to be unassailable.

But "everybody's got a plan until they get hit in the mouth." Reality obliterates Timothy's statement before the words are even out of his mouth. He simply may not know this. His attitude is actually very close to mine when I was in my early 20s and thought Pure Theory like von Misean economics was both true and practical. But it isn't practical and, by Jamesian logic, is therefore not true. Age and experience and discussion will teach him so, or it won't. All we can do is tell our stories or our friends' stories.

I don't think Timothy is bad. On this topic I don't think he's stupid. He's merely, albeit spectacularly, ignorant. The cure for ignorance is patience and teaching, not abuse.

I dont either, I think he is being ignorant and simplistic but not evil. He is speaking academically, forgetting that there are mitigating factors that simple logic doesnt take into account. He sounds like the people who say poor people should just work harder and they wont struggle anymore. In theory the logic is sound, in the real world it is laughable and downright ridiculous.

If you know someone is an abuser*, because you were the victim, what is your responsibility to stop the abuser from repeating on you or another?

Is your responsibility different if you are not the victim but knowledgeable** of an abuser?

Coupla things. (1) Arab-looking guy has an altercation at a bar in Bumf-ck Pennsylvania just outside of Scranton. (2) Dude prosecuted Hamdan -- the modern day gold standard for civil liberties litigation. It's not the usual profile in sexual assault.

This may be a case of Pennsyltucky don't like a brownie.

Three men at the bar were later arrested for assaulting Ashmawy, which the official claims was a "wholly unprovoked" attack, the publication reported.

Ashmawy himself was not arrested or charged with a crime that night, according to the report.
Or it may not and he may have done it. But I have healthy skepticism until other details come in.

I have a hard time taking the Hill seriously (or any of these publications) when they cant even get basic grammar and spelling right.

                          From the article:

"According to documents obtained by the publication, Omar Ashmawy, the office's chief counsel and staff director, is being sued by a men involved in the incident, which occurred in Milford, Pa."

I mean I get it, you probably typed fast and missed it but dont you have an editor on staff that can read?

So, I pose this simple question. How do we stop sexual harassment from happening? Every company has a policy. Some companies probably have a simple education program besides the handbook, maybe read a pamphlet or watch a video and sign this document that says you understand the policy. It still happens. How do we stop it from occurring?

I've never said prosecution or civil lawsuits are simple, easy or painless. They are tools there put by the government to punish people who break the law. Change jobs? Not simple, easy or painless. I never said it was.
