I hope to hell he doesn't equivocate. I know there might be civil lawsuit repercussions but this is one of like five people I respect. Say "I did this thinking it was funny but it's not funny and I am terribly sorry." And then tell the woman in person and not on camera "If there is anything I can do to expiate please tell me."
