My mom (late 70s) has had a nagging cough and lethargy for a few weeks now. They identified anemia right away and have been chasing the cause for the last week or so. As a result, she is about to get the 5th (and maybe even more) cancer diagnosis of her lifetime: thyroid cancer in the '70s, two unrelated breast cancers in the '90s, basal cell in the '10s, squamous cell earlier this summer, and just today a terrifying abdominal CT scan with swollen lymph nodes and at least 5 other sites of concern including colon and pancreas.

If there's a way, though, she's not a bad bet. She completed her 11th marathon 4 weeks after her second mastectomy and went on to do 10 more - one tough mother.

Give that cancer the business, mom.
Hope your mom kicks cancer's as-s, Lynah.

          • So, mostly good news to report, if your 6th (I can’t count) cancer diagnosis can ever be considered good.

It appears to be “just” lymphoma and it does not appear to have spread beyond the lymph system. The spots that showed up all turned out to be lymph nodes near the liver, pancreas, etc, but those organs appear to be minding their own business so far, so that is a tremendous relief. 6 months of chemo has already started; prognosis for this is still only fair - 50% survival at 5 years, lower if you have other risk factors (my mom has a fistful). So, we shall see.

The thing you need to understand about my mother is that for a good decade after her back-to-back breast cancers in the 90s, she was heavily involved in pretty much every cancer support group in our little city of 35,000 people. 6+ in-person meetings per week and keeping tabs on the progress and prognosis of up to 600 fellow travelers at any given time. And when I say “keeping tabs,” that means she could tell you everything about them, from their kids to their conditions - it was like listening to Erin Brokavich give a rundown of her clients. And the cards - my goodness, the cards. Every one if those people got birthday cards and anniversary cards and cancer milestone cards. She had an entire filing cabinet for her card collection so that she’d always be certain to have just the right one. I swear that when she left the Hallmark store, it looked like she had been grocery shopping, not card shopping. Those cancer survivors were her people, and that’s what she called them, “I lost 3 of my people this week,” she’d say. I only hope she feels 1% of the love and support that she has showered on others.
If you don't change the world today, how can it be any better tomorrow?

I am doing my best, exercising and I kicked sodas entirely (down from about 30 a week). I have been measuring my calories for three weeks, averaging now around 1600 and never exceeding 1900. I'm down from 251 to 238 (at 5-8). I told myself the day I hit 199 I announce my retirement. There is no stronger motivation, including living.

                          13 down, 39 to go (25%).
