What, so a requirement to be a patriot is to like going out and killing people? For R's- that does make sense.

I would think not slagging off those who have fought and died would be a requirement. We have our freedom because of them, and should be grateful for it.

Almost as kind as celebrating the rebels who killed 300,000 American soldiers during the Civil War.

But 1620 < 1776, so unwrap the flag from your neck before you lose consciousness.

Where have I ever celebrated the confederacy? All my family fought for the North. Where that is the case I don't criticize people whose family fought for the south, but I certainly don't endorse it.

1620 is the real start of the country as far as I'm concerned. 2020 will be an exciting year as its 400th anniversary of the Mayflower and 200th anniversary of Maine's freedom.

That's a rather macabre and cynical analysis.

You have to remember the way armies used to be formed. They were composed of the dregs and the adrenaline freaks.

The rise of the nation state and mass conscription ruined that -- then armies just became a cross-section of everybody and we lost the evolutionary advantage.

Just another example of how it's all been sh-t since 1620.

We used to have regularly scheduled wars, and these guys died disproportionately in wars because "l'honneur de bataille."

We don't do that anymore, and when we finally have one we kill way more civilians than soldiers which completely misses the point of having wars.

There will always be a few socially inept nutters in every generation. Don't smother your kids with hard-line religious views, and/or fear of the unknown - that will solve 90% of the problem.
