That is genuinely inspired programming. Very nice.

If at all possible, see Suspiria in a theatre. One of the greatest movies -- horror or otherwise -- ever made, and you could probably write a doctoral dissertation on every frame from it.

Just got an update from Regal Cinemas. They will be doing a double feature next Thursday at 6pm: The original Blade Runner followed by the new Blade Runner 2049. Unfortunately my local Regal is not doing it. Not a surprise since I was one of only six people who attended the Planet of the Apes trilogy in July.

Regal is also doing Horror Fest in October. My theater is not currently listed but I definitely will be speaking to our manager. I want!

Going tonight to a free screening of The Dark Knight at Smitty's. Big, comfy chairs and they bring food right to your seat. They make all their money selling dinner, so freebies are common. They devote two of six screens to Patriots games every week, and do great business with their Game of Thrones showings. I just wish they had an IMAX screen for the big movies.

just got back from kingsman 2. quiet until the last 1/3.

on the KU flight back from london watched some ben affleck, gladiator guy movie. state of play perhaps. over cliche movie if their ever was one.

also KU doesn't have a lot of money to spend so the other options that mookie watched were ocean's 12, then rush hour 3 seriously now, how much does hollywood really charge these airlines to screen movies?!?!

But c'mon, it's got Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and one of my all-time favorite "hey, it's that guy" guys, Sean Whalen. I'll admit, I'll watch bits of Twister when ever I surf onto it. Yesterday, as a matter of fact.

Still Alice:

Gut-punch of a movie. 50 year old diagnosed with early onset familial Alzheimer's Disease. Tough to watch. Really tough. Highly recommend.

And Clown, a local theater did that with Animal House last year. Still worth it to see on the big screen.

Welled up a coupla times watching that. Well deserved Best Actress Academy Award for Julianne Moore.

Also, from Kepler's reply, Marcus Theaters does screenings of various ballets and operas. I know many of them are from Vienna, but there may be some Met ones there too. No matter how many times I try, I just can't get into that stuff.

I'll look for that, thanks. I had two "ins" on opera: I studied play-writing and theater history so there's a natural connection, and I took a clapping for credit music course in college on opera where they stripped it down to the machine language and rebuilt it, so when I see it I'm following along with the composer and librettist watching them make decisions and it's fascinating.

Even with that I loathe Wagner, everything atonal, and everything after about 1912. Benjamin Britten can bite me, and Woyzeck is woeful.

Is that part of the Fathom Events/TCM program? They are doing Princess Bride here in October and Casablanca in November. Those programs are top notch.

I'm not sure if Fathom is an org that promotes the old movies or a theater company, but my local theater is a Marcus theater, and TCM is associated with the showing. The movie's making its rounds in the local Marcus locations. The Sunday showing on October 15 is in Oakdale, about 25 minutes farther from me, but it sold out, thus the 7:00PM Wednesday viewing.

That sounds familiar to the Animal House thing I went to. Unfortunately, only about 10 people were in the theater, and it was on a Sunday. I still loved it, though. Would like to see more of these offerings.

Alamo Draft House does this with their "special viewing parties." IINM the Fathom events are a copycat of those.

Fathom does one thing really well: simulcasts of performances from the Met. It's a brilliant idea and a service you can't get anywhere else.

Thanks for the info! I probably will. I know this type of thing is spotty, and obviously more costly to the consumer. The Godfather would be pretty cool to see on big screen. Would love to see the original True Grit on the big screen.

The 30th Anniversary showing of The Princess Bride is playing on a few screens around town. My gf and I are hitting up the show in a few weeks at the Rosemount theater. It turns out that they get mucho dinero because it's a "special event". $12.50/ticket.

It is now the #5 movie oh the year. It will not catch Spiderman: Homecoming for #4. It is currently #14 only $125 million away from being in the top 10. It could probably get there but is not slated for a release in China so will likely come up short. It is also now the #6 R-rated film ever released and only needs another $13 million to pass Matrix Revolutions and become #4 all time.

Speaking of Spidey, it is now the #4 movie worldwide, passing Wolf Warrior II. What is Wolf Warrior II you ask? A film released almost exclusively in China on July 28. The Chinese prevented any other blockbuster from opening for a month and the result was an impressive $870 million box office. Ironically, most pundits expected Spiderman to remain at #7 but the Chinese blackout helped the webslinger. After only three weeks in release it has banked $130+ and risen to fourth. It is also #4 at the domestic box office but will not catch Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (domestic) or Despicable Me 3 (international) for #3 on either list.

Beauty and the Beast's $1.26 Billion (worldwide) and $504 million (domestic) is currently #1.
