Well it's up there with Sarah Palin as ambassador to Russia.

Better would be Hillary as head of the SEC (the agency, not the conference).

Didn't know much about Gregg Popovich, but he gets it.

What gets lost in the process are African-Americans, Hispanics, women and the gay population, not to mention the eighth-grade developmental stage exhibited by him when he made fun of the handicapped person," he said. "I mean, come on. That's what an eighth-grade bully does, and he was elected president of the United States. We would have scolded our kids. We would have had discussions and talked until we were blue in the face trying to get them to understand these things. And he is in charge of our country. That's disgusting.

Preach. The Electoral College isn't to blame. It did exactly what it was supposed to do. It weighs each state proportionally so that just two dominant population centers cannot dictate the voice of the nation. I didn't understand it in 2000, but I learned a lot about it after the election and subsequently understand it's protection. Every person running for President is aware of how that game is played, and knows how to play it.*

Yep. Same here. Grew up in BFE Michigan and luckily I was able to move out and now I live in "one of dem durn Lib-Er-AL cities with those weird folk." It's shocking considering I was raised to be tolerant and respectful of others, only to see those who remain in my home town growing dissonant from listening to their own echo chamber.

They'll think the dirty liberal Dems are out to screw them AND Trump, because the Dems obviously blocked W from helping them during his eight years.

... while promptly ignoring the fact that the R's controlled the house until the last two years of Bush's term, and the R's controlled the Senate for the middle four years of W's eight.

Although I don't disagree that the electoral college is not to blame, I think you've been sold some loaded bill of goods. Its not horrible, its just not optimal. The claimed benefit of two population centers carrying the election are dwarfed by the major distortions that the electoral college brings. So what would happen if the NE and the west coast both voted for Hillary like crazy? It would be very similar to what happened with the electoral college. She might get 8 extra votes...but that's not earth shattering and in this case would not have been even close to determining the election.

What does representation do? It doesn't overweight uneducated rural poor. Its not terrible that they get more of a say than the rest of us, but why? More importantly the electoral college massively distorts state level outcomes. A state votes 52% for a candidate and it gives them 100% of that states votes...which happened a lot this election. Sometimes it evens out, sometimes it doesn't. Lastly, there is this matter of swing states. If you're state is on either end of the spectrum, you really have no say. The election is determined by the 50 electoral votes in the middle. The point is its totally arbitrary, has no logical basis and massively distorts the will of the people.

One could make the case that its a 'core part of this country'. Folks have claimed that its what the founding fathers wanted and that's enough. But as was shown in the other thread...they did not in fact want the electoral college but were forced to adopt it based on being held hostage by the southern states. Lastly, just because people expect it...and its been used forever, doesn't make it the best system. The current way of doing things isn't always the best. One really shouldn't glorify the electoral college...it doesn't deserve it.

As an example, you think the coal miners in fly over country, remember what bush did, when just recently Obama told them to go screw? They voted for what they think will help their wallets. They knew hilary wasn't going to help them.

Electoral is not optimal, but it's better than straight popular vote.

As for the protests, now there is a petition for the Electoral College to basically go against the rules in place? Hey, Hillary lost according to the rules. Deal with it, and let's find a way to make the best of it. Speak your piece at community meetings, council halls, whatever. It was all fair and square, just like the last election, and the election before that.

Trump has come out saying he'll support coal. That could be useful for these communities. But how many of his supporters come from coal communities...about 0%. Many of them were Iowa or Wisconsin farming communities. He has made no proclomations about farm subsidies...he's a New Yorker afterall. Coal is not far out of his wheelhouse, farming is. What about MI? How does he support those communities. Rural Alabama? That's a good one. Even a modest amount of rural support will mean massive spending.

Maybe, just maybe this is the first time the GOP lowers taxes on the poor and minimizes spending or raises taxes on the rich. I definitely wouldn't fall for it again personally. In the end, much of any gain will line corporation pockets...and when it helps the poor, it will be wiped out by higher taxes on the poor as it is every single time the GOP gets in office. Its the same story, the GOP will screw the poor. They always do.
