                    Or like this

FYI, next Sunday is the last day of the Octave of Easter, otherwise known as Low Sunday or, to us fuddy duddies, Quasimodo Sunday.

Does this work with Lazarus and the rich man, or with the prophet who hitchhiked on a chariot of fire, etc? Is it based on any text or is it just vile popery?

Maccabees. Prayers for the dead. Prayers for the dead are ineffectual for those in heaven or hell. Therefore there must be an intermediate place for the not quite perfect.

This is a fascinating and beautiful song.

These are the verses it is based on.

tl; dr: Jephthah promises God if he wins his war he will sacrifice the first thing that comes to meet him when he returns home. Which turns out to be his only child. So that happened.

                              I like this better.

Psalm 51 (50 for the pre V2 fans). Sung during the Tenebrae service on Spy Wednesday or Holy Thursday, depending.

If you want the story behind Allegri's Miserere, the BBC had a Sacred Music episode. I recommend the CD set from Amazon.

                                Featured in Civ IV. :-)

I had never heard of the Tenebrae rite. Another casualty of the changes in the liturgy.

                                Though I had seen this.
