Please forgive me for being a shill for Amazon.

Just got done watching the 4 disc set Monsters and Madmen from Criterion: The Haunted Strangler (Boris Karloff); Corridors of Blood (Boris Karloff); First Man into Space; and The Atomic Submarine.

Anyone else ever seen these B films from the late 50s? Pretty tame "horror" and Sci-fi. Not my interest exactly, but I enjoyed watching Karloff and the rudimentary Sci-fi films.
I love Amazon for this reason. You can find anything for movies, and it's usually at a decent price. Usually, I have a list going, as I churn through my Netflix movies. If I deem the movie good enough to buy ("good" being a multitude of qualifications, depending on the genre/type of movie), it goes on the list. I'm at about a 20% buy-rate right now, and that's stayed pretty consistent since I got Netflix a few years back.

Phenomenon. It's slightly saccharine but imho not overly cliched and I really enjoy the performances of Travolta, Duval and Whitaker whenever I watch it.

          Heroes Of The East:

GREAT movie of the classic kung fu era. An arranged marriage between a Chinese man and Japanese woman creates a conflict, due to the difference in martial art styles. Loved it. Showcased many styles of the arts, and also highlighted the cultural differences between the Chinese and Japanese. Highly recommend.

I'm watching Equilibrium right now. Sean Bean's death happened at an uncommon moment for his career.

Isn't it, though? Beautiful movie, all the way through. Also, apparently when Grace Keller and Cary Grant have sex it's like fireworks. OK, I can see that.

Saw Straight Outta Compton on Sunday. Certainly eye opening. Better than I expected as I thought it would be a vanity project. Sad to see potential wasted due greed and youth. I enjoyed seeing how the group members influenced many in their genre and how what was going on around then influenced their music (unlike the hip hop stars today, it seems). Won't be up for any awards, but it probably should be.

Hubs and I will be seeing Black Mass either Friday or Saturday. Looking forward to seeing if they hold true to the book or focus on Whitey. The book is about the bungled FBI investigation more than a biography of Whitey, but the trailers don't seem to portray that as the focus of the movie.

One of the (many) ways in which older movies are vastly superior to contemporary movies was that the code forced directors and screenwriters to deliver hints and nuance. So you could have an entire discussion between two characters mean one thing to cosmopolitan adults, another to Ma and Pa Kettle, another to late teens, and yet another to young kids, and have them all work (and be entertaining) at the same time. This happens in musicals all the time and is one of the joys of watching well-created art.

I've heard that the people who knew Whitey were quite shaken by how closely Depp portrayed him.
