  • Re: USCHO Music Thread 3: They Heard Me Singing

In the car, I've been playing Neil Diamond and Elton John. Really evokes memories of sitting with my mom, listening to this stuff, having a good time with her. At Mom's funeral in 2010, I missed a golden opportunity to honor her with "Done Too Soon" by Neil Diamond.

Fastball: All The Pain Money Can Buy
      Better Than Ezra: Deluxe

Found them at Goodwill for $3 each. And listening to the Fastball CD... they were pretty good.

I bought that Fastball cd purely because I loved, loved, loved Fire Escape. It was a total surprise to me how good that whole thing was, way better than it had any right to be. Just a lovely bit of power pop.

I still loathe The Way, though.

I bought it for "Out of My Head," but "Better Than It Was" stuck out at me. And listening to the lyrics of that song, given that I got a better job and got out of a dilapidated house... it really is better than it was for me.

Sinatra. After my last night at the Joe, it feels appropriate.

Never a wrong time for Sinatra.
Never really developed a taste for tequila. Kind of hard to understand how you make a drink out of something that sharp, inhospitable. Now, bourbon is easy to understand.

Those arrangements, though. Waffle House serves up less syrup and lard.

Ol' Blue Eyes had a wonderful voice, but on many of his pieces it's overlayed with so many strings and so much schmaltz it's unlistenable. Not his fault, but it's dreck.

The brass usually gets to me.

I love hearing him for about 4 or 5 songs and then I just have to shut it off.

Ska would be so great if it didn't beat me over the head with horns...

See, as a (former) trumpet player I don't care. We're better than you, and we're the loudest, most arrogant pr!cks of the group because we know it.

The brass is never the problem with 50s crooner music. It's partly syrupy strings and partly maudlin singers. Frank's voice is beautiful but he has his share of godawful Catskills gunk. Dude never said no to a paycheck, so he wound up with a mountain of garbage to go with an admittedly sizable hillock of great songs.

It actually bothers me a lot more with Frank because he was such a great performer (when he wanted to be) and really knew what he was doing (when he cared). He was just very, very lazy -- he spent the last 30 years of his career with feet up and mind in neutral. But if Gary Cullen had had a work ethic he would have won Hobey Baker.
