Today, thanks to the Internet and digital recording, there's no true underground or insular scenes for "a sound" to develop anymore. There's a niche available for everyone who runs a search, and people can stay in their little silos. There's no more going over to friend's houses to listen to new albums, no more trading mix tapes, etc. Worst of all, grade school music programs keep getting cut back, so the number of kids bothering to pick up an instrument, ANY instrument, has declined.

    Good points.

Hadn't really considered all of that and you lay out a good case.

The bolded part makes me particularly sad.

I think you're 100% correct with regard to major labels, however there was, is and likely always will be an underground for you to explore whether it's hip-hop or rock or punk etc. I ran a small independent record label for 12 years. 3-4 of the bands we released with achieved some critical acclaim (NPR's The Story, Alternative Press, Magnet, Washington Post, Chicago Sun-Times, Journal-Sentinel, Buddyhead, Dallas Observer, baeblemusic, Onion A.V. CLub and others) but largely our bands were more underground, some wrote songs that were a hybrid of punk and rock so they straddled a line that was too aggressive and rockin' for indie rock kids and too melodic for some of the more punk or metal fans. there is a wealth of great and unheralded rock/indie/country/hip-hop out there for you,... it's more that there's sooooooo many more bands due to the ease of recording etc that you have to wade through a million more layers to find what you like, OR find the website/zine/blog/twitter feed etc where the person behind it generally hits home runs for you when they recommend bands.

There's plenty of new rock with an edge but you won't hear it on the radio. Even in the heyday of alternative when there were actual alternative stations, said stations changed formats more times than I can count and often were at times tame compared with what we listened to beyond their catalog. I don't find as much as I used to due to time constraints, but thanks to the beauty of the Internet, the local library (when I was still in town), iHeart, RS, Spin, last.fm, etc I am still able to find new and viable artists.

The new should always be reviled by the old. We each have our role in this play.
There are a few songs I really like (feel guilty about it, but I like 'em). For example "All About That Bass" by Megan Trainer or however you spell it is catchy. I dig it. And that Bruno Mars song that was huge. And of course, "SOB" by Nathaniel Raitcliff (although he himself has been around for quite a while).

Listened to the Living Colour version of Prince's "17 Days" today and was reminded of how amazing Corey Glover's vocals generally are...despite this being an understated cover he shines and it led me down the rabbit hole of Living Colour videos...woot!

Was just commenting to my wife yesterday (after catching the end of PR on VH1) that Purple Rain is a very similar song to Comfortably Numb. Seems that David would agree. A little clunky on the transition, but a cool tribute at last night's show nonetheless.

Of course we can't link Youtube videos anymore, but search Gilmour and Prince and it should come up.

So I picked up Trouble Boys at the local bookstore yesterday, and then spent two hours in the parking lot just scanning some stuff, mostly the ending chapters concerning what the band members did post-breakup and the recent reunion tour. Looks like it's gonna be a truly great read.

Can someone with a more refined ear than mine explain to my why Taurus is going after Led Zeppelin? I'm listening to this video here - link - where someone put together about 20 songs that all use the same chord progression, going all the way back to Bach (who's not named as a defendant). One of the songs included is from a band named Cartoone, Ice Cream Dreams, for which Jimmy Page played as a session guitarist during its recording. That recording pre-dated LZ's tour with Taurus.

not sure if this will work or not

                        https://www.facebook.com/jawbreaker/...type=3&theater

I saw this in the morning and it brought back my most vivid memory of that particular Nirvana show

...The indelible moment of this show for me was not the music but a break where Kurt and Pat were tuning and a kid yells out "hey Kurt, how about a big smile for Milwaukee"...Kurt lifts his head very slowly, makes eye contact with whomever that was behind me and then drops his gaze back down to the tuner. No smile, no words, no expression...several months later when I got the news of his passing I thought of this moment and right or wrong I surmised the look on his face said "I'd rather be anywhere but on stage right now"...

I posted that on fb and a short time later a former local record store owner replied that he was at the show and had received permission to video tape both Mudhoney and Jawbreaker on the condition "Kurt is ok with that"

the record store owner waited outside of Mecca Arena for Nirvana to show up and when they did he said "Kurt looked so miserable with dead eyes" that he decided not to bother even asking. he couldn't imagine a positive scenario out of it

it's such a vivid yet depressing memory to me to see Cobain in my mind's eye now slowly, ever so slowly raise his head to locate the person who yelled at him to smile, and his absolutely ghost-like, vacant stare back...

But **** what a great ****ing band and what a terrible tragedy that he's gone, music or not
