  • Re: USCHO Music Thread 3: They Heard Me Singing

There is all kinds of great music being played today if you know where to search. My sources include iHeart radio (much better than Pandora for variety), last.fm, The Current 89.3, pick an artist you like/find a video on YouTube/look on the right for stuff that pops up/explore, Hennepin County Library (and I assume others in major metro areas), I read reviews from RS and Spin and then fine the music online to check out to see if it's worthy, etc, etc.

Bless my sons because they listen to some very cool music compared with their peers and have actually started to influence some of them to expand their own listening into alt rock both new and old. They were telling the other day about Portugal the Man, Bloc Party, Band of Horses, Sponge, Polica, Black Keys, OneRepublic, Oasis, etc, etc all of which came from my thumb drive plugged into the car.

I will never grow tired of trying to find something new. That and just listening to music every day is a huge part of what keeps me alive.

I'm glad I have friends who are musicians, because they're constantly telling me about new artists. That's how I found out about The National, Interpol, Over The Rhine, Florence + The Machine, The Used, Fleet Foxes, My Morning Jacket, etc.

Also, I don't want to listen to sad songs all the time. I'm looking for music that can be cheerful, without being sickeningly sweet. Any suggestions?

Happy music? Always look to ska and reggae.
Never really developed a taste for tequila. Kind of hard to understand how you make a drink out of something that sharp, inhospitable. Now, bourbon is easy to understand.

This. Although vicious ska is often amazing.

Bob rarely is the music I listen to depressing, although that's not s 100% gaurantee. Check out links if stuff I've posted here they you've not yet discovered.

Although I recommend The Samples right off the bat as a band I think you'd enjoy based upon the artists you've noted being a fan of and it's pretty upbeat stuff. My Mirning Jacket, Maroon 5 (not my style but...), Bruno, Portugal the Man...

And I just listened to this the other day. A nice brew of New Orleans funk and soul, and Robbie Robertson's roots-based rock.

"Happy Hippopotamus" is a go-to for when I need my sports lifted. Really hard to be sad when listening to Cloud Cult.

The first time I heard TMBG was on Tiny Toon Adventures. "Istanbul (not Constantinople)" and "Particle Man."
