    I think we are gradually moving to a situation where guys can't sit down in Washington, Moscow,and London and redraw those boundaries. I for one welcome our irrelevance. The US position in the Middle east is zugzwang and the sooner we're forced to realize it the better.

    US needs an unspoken agreement with Russia that they can support Assad all day to keep a hold on his territory while we back the Kurds in Syria and then take the fight to ISIS held territory. No fan of the old boy, but at this point in time we've got bigger fish to fry than Assad. Were there no ISIS absolutely encourage his ouster but its down the list of priorities at this point.

    So, Kurds get their own territory across Iraq and Syria. Ineffective but better than the alternative govts in Baghdad and Damascus hold their territory, and its bombs away everywhere else. Pretty soon there won't be anybody but terrorists left in this part of the world as everybody else has packed up and left for Europe.

    @ianbremmer: US: Assad Must Go
    Russia: No
    US: Seriously
    Russia: We're Sending Tanks
    US: We're Flexible on Timing
    Russia: Fighter Jets

    You guys are looking to stir the right-wing pot when there is no stew to stir. Now, if we were talking about an openly gay UCC commander, that would be a huge deal and a historic news story.
    It's still important. Prejudice can kill by one cut but more often by a thousand. It can die by a thousand as well.
