                            I must admit that though I knew the US was prison-crazy I didn't realize the incredible dimensions of the problem. The US currently incarcerates 725 people per 100,000. To put in perspective how enormous that is, the comparable numbers for the other largest economies:

                            725 US
                            119 China
                            49 Japan
                            76 Germany
                            146 UK
                            100 France
                            33 India
                            301 Brazil

                            Basically, we're a police state.

                            The comparable number for American blacks is 3,074.

                                I'm quite surprised that your post didn't include anything about the Prison Industrial Complex. In order for some states to save operational money, they have outsourced their corrections facilities to private companies. These private companies, in turn, have lobbied their respective state (and sometimes federal) governments for mandatory minimum sentencing, lessening of parole, and higher arrest/conviction rates, sometimes to the point of violating the Constitution even if by trickery, in order to keep the prisons full because they are paid by the person incarcerated. Some states, such as NY in 2000, have prohibited the use of private companies running prisons.
