Yeah, the Graham ministry is absolutely not "big business".

Not compared to the Walmarts, Targets, Apples, etc. that increasingly tilt toward liberal interests in favor of what Graham considers moral decay.

Ever notice that the ministers of larger churches live in huge mansions? And if you ever watch The 700 Club, they talk about how these people found insane amounts of wealth because they donated to the club?

I know. I just find it amusing when the multi-millioniares complain about the multi-billioniares.

              It's the usual hypocrisy.

Is this true in regard to Franklin Graham? I've never heard anything about him living in a huge mansion and my general impression is that he's not that type, but I honestly don't know.

It's possible, I'm sure. Also, the mansions are typically tax-sheltered, too, because they are considered "rectories".

Of course they are. I wish him much success in washing the gay away from the world.

It's possible means we don't know. Isn't a rectory for a pastor of a church or such? Graham, I don't believe pastors a church, but rather is involved in things like the charity Samaritan's Purse that helps with things like disaster relief.

My impression of the elder Graham was he was a sort of inoffensive Dale Carnegie type of preacher and his theology was a Chauncey Gardiner-esque "plant the seed in the spring that you will see green shoots." He seemed like Rotary Club stuff, as opposed to the crazies like Oral Roberts or the transparent con men like Pat Robertson. Now, spoiled sons are often malignant versions of their more honorable fathers (Dubya, William Kristol, John Podhoretz), so younger Graham may just be another hypocrite riding the God gravy train, or not. Personally I'd never heard of him until this thread.

I'm familiar with Samaritan's Purse (and Franklin) from back in the 80s - our church youth group supplied labor to some of the work sites that SP was funding to fix up old houses. They were just over the border in Boone, NC.

Ironically, their motto is "Our purse is always empty." $295M doesn't sound empty to me...
If you don't change the world today, how can it be any better tomorrow?

Looking at Charity Navigator, Samaritan's Purse is very highly rated. Same thing on Charity Watch. We give to them occasionally and when I've looked into them in the past, they've always been highly rated. But, hey, with Franklin Graham speaking out, some people are going to dislike them even if they are an efficient charity. As noted, if you don't say the right things in this country, you better watch out.

We'll find that one out in eternity.

Which of course has almost nothing to do with the cultural tides in this country, which demonstrate what I say in spades.
