I'm still not sure what to make of Karam.

I think it really sucks basically a week or two before the season starts Rookie of the Year Gabby Chavez got left out in the cold with a merger of sorts involving his team. Met him at Pocono, really nice kid.

Yeah, I agree Chavez should be on the grid. The lack of sponsorship is killing Indycar as a whole.

I wonder when we'll see a ramp up in advertising for the 100th 500.

They really should have paid for a super bowl ad and gone all out. Like a one minute ad encapsulating the history of the race, the triumphs of underdogs and big teams alike and the tragedies like vukovich, also big with showcasing f1 guys trying to win like g hill, Emmo, Mansell, piquet, j Clark, et al. There are some incredible stories to be told. The last 1-2 generations are really unaware of.

Last time Indy sold out was in 1995 when Villeneuve won. The split really hurt INDY more than the folks in the hulman family would care to admit

Chicken or egg- Indy car is killing sponsorship.

What they need to do is figure out a way to make the lesser teams more competitive to make the racing more compelling to watch. And more eyes will lead to more sponsors, etc.

While it's neat that there is a little vehicle competition, it's also a pretty big barrier to get in, and be reasonably successful.

(I posted on a different board how the top racing groups are so difficult to have a highly skilled, but underfunded program to put something together. Either a package of stuff available or making your own car- The Offy vs Cosworth days or the Cosworth v Illmore days are very long gone, let alone the "special" days with interesting engines.)

They did a SB commercial, I waited around all game for it and it never popped up. Turns out it was a regional commercial only.

BTW, I ordered Boston GP tix today. They sent out an email with a code and link. These people are so unorganized it is hilarious but I really do think this event is going to happen.

Pretty pricey. We'll see if they priced out a lot of people. I remembering seeing one of their slide shows that said they were going after college kids as a demographic. Not with these prices they aren't.

I know it's not open wheel, but does anybody follow the WEC or Weather Tech series? I went to 3 F-1 races at Indy back in the 2000's and rarely even watch anymore; too boring. I like Indy Car
road courses which is why I'm going to Road America this summer. I've also been to a few Tudor/Weather Tech series races at Road America...cool stuff.

Even though we now have a 2016 thread, I'll answer this here.

I followed ALMS religiously (usually always went to Mosport, Lime Rock, and Mid-Ohio and Baltimore when they were there, even went to VIR once). When they merged, I lost some interest. However, the new rules coming up should make this series fun to watch again (of course, GTLM was always a great class to follow and was never hampered by the merger, but I have to have some cool prototypes before I can get completely into endurance sports car racing).

I plan on going to Watkins Glen this year since it's nearby (I even went there when it was Grand Am (a series I hated) because I usually could always find a free pass through my contacts, so I figured what the heck...). Perhaps, next year, I'll start going to Mosport and Lime Rock again.

I would love to go to a full fledged WEC event. But, if I'm going to spend the money to get to COTA, I'd rather spend that money going there for an F1 race. If they someday end up at Indy (which has been rumored), I'll consider it (not a great track to see those cars on). Of course, I'll have orgasmic thrills if Watkins Glen lands a WEC date, but I doubt that will ever happen. Road America is probably looked upon more favorably by the WEC for a second U.S. date.
