Re: The official thread of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Boston

I'm very excited about this. I know we won't get it because people here have already formed groups to rally against it.

I guarantee the marathon course would be the same as the normal Boston marathon. Too much history there.

No way it's a winter Olympic athlete. All the more so sincethe 1980 hockey team lit the flame in Salt Lake.

        Bird is a possibility.

I'm sure it will be suggested. But it needs an exemption from the normal rules since it doesn't end where it begins (and I believe that on the whole it is slightly downhill) and it would be a logistical nightmare if anything else substantial is going on in the city. And some of the things that the Boston Marathon is very good at (like accommodating thousands of runners) don't apply here.

The Boston Globe already published a piece opposing it. And we already know how much the rest of the country just loves Boston.

I'm trying to convince locals that this will be a boon for their personal finances: rent out their apartment/house for three weeks for an incredible amount and go on vacation.

Edit: Here is a USA Today piece with 9 reasons NOT to have the games in Boston.

Storrow Drive is the single most terrifying road in North America. I will not be debated on this.

Who is the youngest person to light the flame? By 2024 Raisman will long be retired from competitive gymnastics so she could be picked. He has no Olympic history, but Carlton Fisk would be a solid choice. Problem is many of the sports stars in the area are either winter stars or not from the area.

A little sad to see Chicago not be included again, but I'm also glad after the debacle that Chicago 2016 was.

If it's true that they want to utilize the college dorms as athlete housing for the Boston bid and there is very little new infrastructure, it sounds like they're scaling back expenses to limit costs. About freaking time. There is no reason for bankrupting cities just for the "honor" of hosting the games. Glad the photos of empty buildings from Greece and Beijing are swaying cities from these albatross projects.

The average cost of hosting the Summer Olympics is $19Billion. With most infrastructure already in place (and public transportation financing already approved) the costs associated with the Games would be cut back drastically. I'm sure that will be a major drawback to the IOC, who prefers to "award" the Games to a city so their friends can reap billions in construction contracts.

It's been apparent for a long time that the Olympics is an economic dumpster fire. In the future it will have to be decided 100% by bribery, rather than the 95% it's been since at least Salt Lake City.

Good to see the death of the Traditional Model:

                        1. Pol backs effort "for the pride of our fair city."

                        2. Idiots re-elect pol on fairy dust and champagne dreams.

                        3. Pol awards contracts to pals.

                        4. Wildly popular pol leaves office.

                        5. Pals have massive overruns.

                        6. Event fails to produce projected revenue.

                        7. City residents pay debt service until the end of time.

Also works great for publicly-financed stadiums.

In short, it couldn't happen to a nicer city.

He left out the most charming aspect of Storrow Drive, the annual pictures of a student (usually BU, Scarlet, was it ever you?) sitting forlornly next to his/her U-Haul which is wedged under one of the overpasses. Imagine what it could do to a TV truck!

I'm warming up to it. Still not sure how they get the main stadium built, but beyond that existing facilities ought to do the trick. You'd have to get Harvard to do the aquatics center since 1) they actually care about things like aquatics, 2) they have more money than God, and 3) unlike the rest of the city they have the land to build this on.

Besides, anything that gets the city/state to improve the Gawdawful T (subway system) works for me. I'd hate to see an event delayed because the athletes were stuck in the Red Line tunnel do to "traffic up ahead" or "switching problems" or other such nonsense.

So Go USA! With Boston's ability to win championship, I expect a new record for Gold Medals out of team USA in 2024.

I was under the impression the money for the T had already been approved.
