FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Ryan Westmoreland, a 19-year-old outfielder and Rhode Island native widely considered to be the best position prospect in the Red Sox system, is scheduled to undergo brain surgery Tuesday for an unusual congenital condition that carries significant risk of neurological damage and is potentially life-threatening.

From the "Never in a million years" Department:

        http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4994845

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro flatly denied that the internal discussions have taken place. "Lies," he said. "That's a lie. I don't know who you're talking to, but that's a lie."

The talk may well echo, in the end, another blockbuster deal that was discussed but never consummated many years ago: Executives of the Red Sox and Yankees once famously discussed a trade of Ted Williams for Joe DiMaggio.

That's like arguing a trade of Ted Williams for Dom Dimaggio.

Howard is inferior in every respect to Pujols. Howard is even older than Pujols.

Kip Wells was awesome to see when he first came up, before he got Barry Zito's fastball.

              Same goes for Kris Benson.

Howard is older than Pujols? Why was I thinking that he was young, like 25 years old?

Because he made it to the majors late because 1) he went to college first, not signing a pro contract until he was 21 years old 2) he was blocked at first base by Thome.

The dude won the ROY award and then a month later turned 26.

Albert Pujols is about 2 months younger. To put in perspective, the same year Howard was drafted, Pujols made it to the big leagues.

This is a complete non-story, unless the Cardinals were stupid.

The committee already has made good on Selig's promise by discussing a radical form of "floating" realignment in which teams would not be fixed to a division, but free to change divisions from year-to-year based on geography, payroll and their plans to contend or not.
The honesty of clean, unbridled cynicism. Gotta love it.

Just have the Yankees and Red Sox play 162 RS games. That would solve everything.

The Nationals have released Elijah Dukes, expected to be a starting outfielder. What do you want to bet that he did something stupid........again.

He got 2 hits off me in AAA in The Show.

Great run down by the Mets. They can't get the guy out, so just step on him instead.

Oh, and Rangers manager Ron Washington tested positive for cocaine.

So now we've got to be careful when we ask if a manager is on crack after he makes a bone-headed move.

That's interesting considering Josh Hamilton is on his team. You'd think you could learn from that guys mistakes.

                                Can you say "team-building activity"?
