Not sure what his game is. Flake is kinda all over the place -- he's a nutbar on guns and he was one of the eejits flogging the fake "IRS scandal", but then he's been a McConnell flunky in the fight against Tailgunner Ted, and he was brown-nosing his way up the chain the way back-benchers do... now, suddenly, this? What does it get him, I wonder? Maybe he wants to criticize McConnell in the lead-up to enraging the TPers, in order to split the difference and not be perceived as too establishment? The poor guy just seems confused.

That death scream you hear coming from FRC is the rare triumph of rationality on the Hill.

... 42 Democrats, two independents and eight Republicans banded together to stop the anti-abortion effort on a procedural vote, 11 more than the 41 needed to block the legislation.

At least one of the Republicans, Tom Cotton of Arkanas, said he cast his vote against the bill to protest inadequate military funding.
Cotton is a loudmouthed Thumper but he's no fool, and apparently enough GOPers saw the writing on the wall and stopped the loco-motive, covering their ample behinds with whatever mendacious BS they could scrape out of the well.

The question now is how many Democrats Boehner will need to make up for loony defectors, and whether that will be too many for him to hold on to his Speakership. Lots of gamesmanship between now and next Tuesday night.

Flake strikes me as a guy who might actually try to legislate if the word hadn't come down from Itch to obstruct everything and anything. Say Dole was still running things from back the day. Flake, McCain, Murkowski, Corker & Alexander, Collins - to name a few might try to occupy the middle a bit more than they do now. Drives me nuts though when some rightly retires from the Senate and then starts endorsing bipartisan legislation. How about doing that when it counts?

No matter now, as soon the Ted Cruz caucus will have 41 Senators which will make the dwindling list of quasi-dealmakers irrelevant.

Way too harsh, Rove. This is better for everybody. Boehner was at serious personal risk as a recovering alcoholic in what is a stressful job in the best of times, and these are not the best of times. This indicates that he's going to do the right thing for the country and sign on enough Democrats to pass a clean resolution. Absent other information, it appears he's taking a bullet for the country, and that shows integrity and bravery, particularly since he knew the score and knew he was signing a death warrant inside the current lunatic version of the GOP.

I'm sorry Kep, but he's a fellow nutter and never had the balls to stand up to his party which he's supposed to be leading. I have zero sympathy for the man. IMO he's not "taking one for the team" but rather he knew he was going to lose the motion to vacate, most likely after Pelosi told him she wasn't going to save him with Dem votes. Even Itch McConnell has some ability to get the Senate to follow him and cut a deal when he needs to, and he has to deal with a 60 vote threshold. Boner is supposed to be able to govern with a simple majority. He could very well be the worst House Speaker in the history of the Republic. He's definitely the most pathetic.

As far as the argument that we could get someone worse, I'm sure we can, but the country needs someone in that position who can make a deal and have it stick with his/her caucus. Its not a job for a figurehead. If say Paul Ryan takes that job, even I think that once he agrees to something he'll be able to sell it to his members. Boner's uselessness is a big reason for all the gridlock going on right now.

The Bone Man's a wimp. He should either do what the caucus wants or get out of the job. The fact that he's screwing the caucus over and then turtling is the ultimate BS. These people have to stop saving the party from itself so it can die and we can all move on with something that doesn't resemble Arkham Asylum.

Disagree strongly. You are assuming that if the radicals in the party got their way, promoted their agenda, and then were damaged, they would learn or their constituents would learn, and the GOP would grow up. But that's not how it works. They would always have an excuse why somebody else screwed them over, or that they didn't go far enough. That's how blind ideologies work and right now 30-40% of GOP voters are following a completely crazy ideology that's getting into the same zip code as white supremacist, Kinder, Küche, Kirche ideologies of European far right parties.

The best way to deal with those people is to keep fighting them off, not letting them take the helm and steer us straight into an iceberg. Think of it this way: if the Republican party can look at the Dubya administration and not learn to throw the neocons out of the party, they will never learn anything.

George F. Kennan was right. When confronted with dangerous, aggressive lunacy, containment is the best approach.
