  • College Hockey: Is A Frozen Four In Las Vegas a Possibility?

The NCAA would have to change its stance on NCAA events being held in Las Vegas.

I'd put the chances at better than a return to Ford Field. AKA pipedream.

The cool, fun idea never gets picked, so no.

        But that would be outstanding.

The odds of this happening are about the same as hitting the 00 three times in a row on a single zero roulette wheel...

A return to Ford Field is a nightmare, not a pipedream.

Is there an ice arena that could host the event out there? As in a professional arena and not a minor league facility.

I don't think there really is.

The Las Vegas Wranglers used to play at the Orleans, in their arena. But as I recall that seats about 10,000, tops. And the Orleans kicked the Wranglers out so for all I know they've dumped the ice set up.

I suppose it's possible that someplace like the MGM was built with the equipment necessary to house an ice sheet, but I don't recall ever hearing of anything like the U.S. Figure skating championships or anything else held in Las Vegas.

A few months ago when I was out there they were talking about having the Wranglers play on the top of the Plaza casino in downtown Las Vegas, which I thought was a spectacular idea. Have a puck get fired over the end glass, off the roof and down about 40 stories before nailing a 50 year old Missouri housewife wandering stupidly down Fremont street with her Yard of margarita.
That community is already in the process of dissolution where each man begins to eye his neighbor as a possible enemy, where non-conformity with the accepted creed, political as well as religious, is a mark of disaffection; where denunciation, without specification or backing, takes the place of evidence; where orthodoxy chokes freedom of dissent; where faith in the eventual supremacy of reason has become so timid that we dare not enter our convictions in the open lists, to win or lose.

MGM-AEG Arena is currently under construction, will have a hockey capacity of 17,500, and is the centerpiece of efforts to bring an NHL team to Vegas.

That being said, Vegas sucks. It's soulless and fake and I'd rather go back to Detroit. (To be clear, this means I'd rather attend an event in Detroit than one in Las Vegas, not that I'd rather attend a Frozen Four at Ford Field than one in a brand new arena.)

When was the last time you went?

Vegas sucked in the 80's -- it was awful. Then they figured out how to thrive by going all in on the joke. The Strip is now just performance art. It's the most Absurdist place this side of Alfred Jarry's bathroom; I love it there.

The other thing about Vegas, albeit less relevant for a weekend hockey trip, is if you go 30 minutes west to the edge of the caldera, or 30 minutes east to the rocks, it's one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

A really creative one, potentially. Though I'm not grasping the use of it in this instance.
