    Actually if he does it right it can be two movies. He can add parts from Unfinished Tales and really bridge the story into what starts in The Lord of the Rings. When The Hobbit was written Gandalf may have been an Istari but you were not told that. Gollum may have had a ring, but it wasn't known when Tolkien wrote it that it was Sauron's. Etc.

    There is a whole chapter at the end of The Silmarillion giving the history perspective of the beginning of the 3rd age. A lot could be done with that if done right.

      Yeah but that is going to cost a lot of money and I am just not sure people are going to want to see that much. I mean I love Tolkien and I made it about 20 pages into the Silmarillion before I had to quit. That stuff should be in the extended addition for the hardcore fans and just let the Hobbit be a 3 hour movie about Bumbling Bilbo and his Merry Band of Dwarves

        Unfinished Tales is an easier read, and the 3rd age chapter at the end of The Silmarillion is the easiest part of the book to read.

        He could take a lot from The Istari part of Unfinished Tales, and there is some writing in Unfinished Tales that fleshes out what Sauron is doing at the time that Gandalf comes calling to Bilbo.

          That would be genuinely cool.

          The thing about Jackson is, despite all the usual self-important myopia of The Well Rewarded Artiste, he does seem to genuinely love the tales and approach them the right way. He had the misfortune to do his work during a period of unprecedented soullessness in Hollywood and so it suffers from the peculiar emptiness of the age, but he isn't a Lucas or Cameron using anything at hand to aggrandize himself, and he isn't a Spielberg using anything at hand to play the same three fortune-inducing chords on the idiot piano that is the general public. He's at least trying to play it straight.

            From what I've read that has/is Jackson's plan. Part of the reason I was really looking forward to it. Also, they're waiting for The Hobbit to issue the extended editions on Blu-Ray afaik.

              I think you are being overly hard on the movies, I thought they were very well done and hardly soulless...and most of my favorite parts were left out.

              Scooby, you are going to be waiting a long time because even if they find a director tomorrow (and we know they wont) it could be years before this is released. Best bet now is for Jackson to do it and just get started.

                Article I just found it sounds like Jackson may end up doing it himself. We'll see. It would be a shame not to get it done soon so the movies would blend somewhat. Ian coming back as Gandalf is key in my mind.

                  As I said, it's not Jackson's fault, it's the time period. 30's movies are marred by inexplicable Vaudeville holdover routines, 50's by sexism bordering on misogyny, 70's by ham-fisted pseudo-"realism," 90's by YDFC casts, today's by overproduction and vacuity.

                  Doesn't mean movies from those periods can't be great, it just means when they age they will be instantly datable as "oh, that's from when movies were that type of stupid."

                    Christopher Lee returning as Saruman would be pretty ****ing awesome as well... and is probably less likely as this thing gets delayed.

                      As for who needs to be in it, Sir Ian as Gandalf is a must as is Lee IMHO. Lee is a LOTR freak, he reads it once a year and knows as much about Tolkien as anyone...plus Saruman Dooku is awesome!

                      I also think Ian Holm needs to be Bilbo or the continuity just won't work. how are we to believe that the One Ring doesn't age you at all if the same character is played by two different people?

                        If I recall correctly, when the LOTR movies were out I read that Lee was the only person associated with the movies who had actually met Tolkien.
