I watched Yes Man...I enjoyed it more than I figured.

Wesley Willis' Joyrides: different from the other doc I watched (which was more just a camera following him around, which is interesting enough). This one started from his childhood and covered his whole life, including interviews with his family, etc. He also talks a bit more about his schizophrenia and you see a the starts of a couple "episodes" in the movie, which is kinda sad, kinda disturbing, since we've all seen "that crazy guy" in the middle of a downtown area, or whatever.
Even for a non-fan, this doc is better than average, and worth watching.
Unforgiven: Great movie, got better as the movie went on. Seemed kinda bland at first, and I was getting tired of Eastwood's constant "I'm not like that anymore" speeches/lines. When English Bob shows up, the whole sorta mystery of his character really started to change the mood of this movie for me, and kicked it into high gear. The ending was great, given its complexity (and of course referencing some of Eastwoods' classic westerns and such).
This would be worth owning.

Recently saw the new Sherlock Holmes, which was about what I expected and good.
Then last week, I randomly picked Book of Eli because nothing really stood out at the moment. Halfway in, I thought it was going to be an atheist flick, then the ending changed my opinion.
Otherwise, it had kind of a typical post-nuclear apocalypse theme, complete with plenty of scorched earth, bombed out cities, scarce resources, desperate villains, and highway violence. Mildly entertaining, but bland.

Isn't the whole thrust of the movie, that Eli, who's got god on his side to kill people cause he's blind, is bringing a bible to some place out west, and some guy who actually wants to rebuild a bit decides it's the most important thing that he needs, so he wastes his resources to find something that he could probably just find in the drawer of some abandoned hotel if this world was based on reality at all?

If you love Don Rickles, if you love old school comedy or if you just love to laugh watch Mr. Warmth the documentary John Landis made about Don...it is AWESOME!

So it was like The Postman?

Re: New/Rented movies: Here comes the movie to change all movies
Had a new experience at a movie theater friday night. The wife and I went to see To Save a Life at a Harkins theater here in the Phoenix area. We were enjoying the movie, and about 3/4 of the way through, at a key point, the screen goes blank. I go out and tell someone, and 15 minutes later they come in and tell us the movie is broken and we can't see the rest. They give us each two free tickets for future movies at Harkins, but we're both wondering what happens the last quarter of the movie. Guess we'll have to go see it again to see the last 1/4. Don't know if the movie reel broke, or the equipment used to show it.

That happened to me once, but it was really early in the movie, my friends and I got free ticket vouchers and I believe a voucher for free pop and popcorn for our inconvenience and ended up going back to see the same movie a couple days later

The Illusionist:
Great story in general, love all the twists and turns and such, but dangit, enough with the sci-fi angle (the one thing that did bug me about The Prestige).
And is it just me, but Norton seemed to kinda mail it in. He just seemed wooden in his acting. The guy who played the Crown Prince was outstanding, while Giamatti (and I'm a fan of his) seemed a little forced (although his character wasn't exactly free-wheeling).
Overall, worth viewing, but I'd only say it was slightly better than average.

Re: New/Rented movies: Here comes the movie to change all movies
I would probably rate The Illusionist 7.5 of 10. Unlike you Brent, I think Norton intentionally gave an understated performance and I thought Giamatti was brilliant. The guy that played the Crown Prince avoided being cliched and Biel was just good enough. I also think the cinematography was excellent, and the editing - especially with respect to Norton's stage act - was well done. On the downside I thought some of the dialogue was a bit choppy, for some reason I could never say to myself during my viewing that, "this is truly great", and yet for me the biggest downfall was that imho this movie demanded an ending that was inexplicable if not unpredictable and it completely failed at that.
Re: New/Rented movies: Here comes the movie to change all movies
I liked The Prestige better than The Illusionist. Not entirely sure why...I guess I was hoping that The Illusionist had a bigger twist at the end that left more with the feeling 'wow, didn't see that one coming'

The bolded part may have helped in my opinion of Norton/Giamatti.
