Have any of you heard about this "Post-Avatar Depression" stuff? Apparently people see the movie and get so into it they leave and get severely depressed to the point of contemplating suicide...what the hell kind of world do we live in?

It was already in the nice planet thread.

And again, the majority of people on the planet Earth actually believe in some type of utopia that they'll go to after death. Some groups even think that if they martyr themselves they get to go there faster.

Of course not, nobody wants to live on Tatooine, that'd be stupid.

BTW, humans have evolved to have sort of an innate superstition reflex.

Take a look at the people pictured in the story. If you were the guy chowing down with the full-size pizza box, you'd be suicidal, too.

I like how they got the guy pirating the movie, too. How impressed was the chick taking tickets with the package that guy had in his pants?

So we've been watching Star Wars at work (I work at a daycare), which I've never seen before. It's awesome, I might get hooked.

I feel stupid though, because I keep asking all the kids (who are 5-9) all kinds of questions and they know everything about it.

                          • Having already seen Funny Games, I decided to rent The Strangers. I was extremely impressed with the original, and I thought this version was extremely well done, although my one complaint is that the "intro" gave away the ending, even if the movie remained agonizing (in a very good way) for the viewer throughout.

                              Very productive visit to Redbox:

District 9: I was surprised how funny this film was. The main character is one of those classic tightwad nervous wrecks, which I thought added a little extra texture to the rest of the film. It was certainly a very creative approach to what is already a very well worn story. Think about how many times you've seen alien invasion stories and never once thought about the likelihood that they'd have had a disease outbreak while the bulk of their civilization was crammed into a ship. It was almost disappointing to see it devolve into an action movie at the end, but it was still a very good movie.

Inglourious Basterds: Tarantino is a fantastic director. Wow. I can't help but compare this film to Sergio Leone films, in the way he elongates scenes while still maintaining a really strong and palpable amount of tension. The opening scene at the farm and the basement tavern scene in particular stood out. You know you're in the hands of a good director when he can present such a simple scene, elongate the bejeesus out of it and still keep you on the edge of your seat.

The Hurt Locker: Very interesting to see a war movie where you see so very little of the enemy and yet maintain such a strong sense of danger and dread throughout (the use of bombs helps, I suppose). Even more rare to see a war movie that is so in tune with the thoughts, fears and behaviors of its characters. It gives it a certain emotional depth that is very rare for the genre. I haven't seen a lot of this year's movies, but I can definately buy into this one as an Oscar favorite.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3: Meh. Certainly not the worst way to spend 100 minutes, but not a lot going on in there. With heist/hostage movies you expect one of two things. Either an interesting plot with twists and turns or a strong cat and mouse game between the hostage taker and the protagonist. The way this film played out had too many holes in it for my taste. If John Travolta has no problem dying, then who is he trying to make all that money for? What was he trying to accomplish? What's the deal with James Gandolfini and his aide thinking about the Wall Street connection, heading out of the room as if they were going to investigate more, and then that whole subplot got abandoned? Unless I'm mistaken (I did go let the dog at one point here), we never see Gandolfini again until after the climax. ***?
