Last time I checked reboots have worked in Denver, St.Paul and Winnipeg, but not sure about Atlanta.

I think a Vegas experiment with any pro team will be real interesting. An NFL team would definitely succeed, just because it's the NFL. But I don't see that happening, at least in the near future.

Vegas is obviously large enough to support a major league franchise. It will also have the benefit of being the only professional franchise in the city, at least initially. But to say there is competition for people's disposable income in that town is a gross understatement.

I think part of the possible success of a major league franchise will depend upon where they put the arena/field. Locals hate the strip, even though it's the bread and butter of the town. They don't like going down there, they don't like the traffic, etc... If you want the locals to come, you'd be better off putting it out on the western edge of town, or to the south.

On the other hand, the strip is where the people are, and there will certainly be fans of the visiting team who will look to take a "road trip" to see their team play, and where better than Vegas?
That community is already in the process of dissolution where each man begins to eye his neighbor as a possible enemy, where non-conformity with the accepted creed, political as well as religious, is a mark of disaffection; where denunciation, without specification or backing, takes the place of evidence; where orthodoxy chokes freedom of dissent; where faith in the eventual supremacy of reason has become so timid that we dare not enter our convictions in the open lists, to win or lose.

Is the honeymoon period over in Winnipeg? If the team keeps playing like the Thrashers they are, the fans will start getting restless.

Lots of open land up near Nellis AFB and the speedway on the North side of town.

I hadn't thought of location issues. But you are correct it will be critical to the success. Personally when I go to Vegas I don't have a car so anything that is not on the Strip or on Fremont St. doesn't get seen by me. I guess it all depends upon if the locals are going to be the main attendance or the tourists.

I would think that is too far oustide of the city for a NHL arena.

The team would organize with the big hotels to setup shuttle services. Added benefit to that setup would be the continued boozing and the outpouring of money that generally comes with it.

I doubt casino hotels will be keen on setting up shuttles that would take paying customers to another locale. Even if they did, and I love Vegas as much as the next guy, but I don't see the NHL succeeding there.

Depending on the lighting in the rink and the exact color of the "warning track" I think it could affect defender's perception of the exact location of the puck.

That's my main point. If you're looking down and see a big orange ring, why wouldn't you also see the yellow kickplate? Maybe try NOT skating directly toward the boards and come in at an angle....or coasting in sideways?

I see zero usefulness...at any level.

Injuries due to awkwardly going into the boards are not due to not knowing where the boards are.

                                538 Article on NHL Expansion

Basically says what hockey fans have been saying for infinity years: PUT TEAMS IN CANADA.

Toronto can hold a second team, Quebec can obviously hold a team, and according to the article there are five other cities that you'd never even consider that have a better starting fanbase than Vegas or Seattle.

Interestingly, Hamilton isn't mentioned in the article. I don't know if they left it out or if the study found that it doesn't actually have the fanbase, which is odd because it seemed like it was close to happening a few years back.
