I wonder at what point the people of Western Europe stand up to him. After he invades Poland?

Supposedly, by treaty, any attack on one NATO country is an attack on all, which would require a unifled response. No more leading from behind then!

NATO is committed to the principle that an attack against one or several members is considered as an attack against all. This is the principle of collective defence, which is enshrined in Article 5 of the Washington Treaty.
Currently there are 28 member countries, only Latvia and Estonia abut Russia directly. But if Russia annexes Belarus, that might also put Lithuania and Poland in play.

EDIT: Norway also has a strip of land that abuts Russia in the far north; however, Putin's pretext so far has been "I have to protect ethnic Russians from oppression." With that rationale, don't be surprised to see Russian troops outside Brighton Beach!

So if Putin gobbles up every nation in Europe that isn't part of NATO no one in Western Europe will bat an eye? What if he starts throwing Jews in Concentration Resettlement Camps? If a weird, ash-colored snow starts falling they'll just chalk that up to a volcano erupting somewhere? At some point the folks in Europe have to stop looking to us to solve their problems for them.

They'll do it as soon as they are inconvenienced and no sooner. This is why we (Americans) tend to laugh at the idea of a unified Europe and European army. When the chips fall they will start to blame the other states and those that can stay out will try to do so (Spain, Italy, France, Norway...) basically anybody that doesn't border the trouble. Germany on east needs to start up-arming and the US has to start talking about missile defense again. If you want Russia to back down then a credible force has to be presented.

Until then, they'll just futz and talk.

Europeans and Ukrainians get to solve their own problems! What a novel concept. Otherwise live with the threat of Putin shutting off your gas and annexing countries. If he threatens a NATO country, start bombing his ***. Otherwise if these countries wanted US protection, they should have formed an alliance. You shouldn't get the benefit of NATO protection without contributing anything to it.

Prime Minister Harper isn't waiting for the feckless one to lead from the front. It's a small contribution, but it is a contribution nonetheless.

Canada will commit six CF-18 fighter jets and 20 military advisers to help NATO bolster its sorties over eastern Europe in response to the escalation of pro-Russian military activity in Ukraine.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the announcement after meeting Chief of the Defence Staff Gen. Thomas Lawson on Thursday to discuss what Canada has in its limited inventory to help the 28-member alliance.

Perhaps much more than symbolic! If Canadian forces (NATO members) are engaged by Russian forces, what happens then? hmm.....

Ummm...I know logic isn't your strong suit, but good would missile defense do in this situation?!? It never covered Ukraine, and Russia isn't invading Poland...
