It is funny that they're trumpeting a NATO base in Poland as the West's first strike point, just as Germany said the first shots of WW2 came from Poland attacking them.

Also because other than the Kaliningrad exclave Poland and Russia do not share a border. Maybe this is also Russia's way of reminding Alexander Lukashenko that he's on the road to Moscow.

edit: apparently it's an "exclave," not an "enclave."

There probably (hopefully) will never be a war in Europe but if there is Russia is making sure their people know who is responsible.

We'll know we're in trouble when they start running Alexander Nevsky on state TV.

I don't interpret it as a run-up to war with Europe, or even a Cold War-style invasion of Ukraine to "restore order." I interpret it as fanning Russian paranoia about war. The Russian economy is going to suffer as sanctions start biting, and Putin wants his population in maximum patriotic fervor.

The best propaganda doesn't "misinform," it sets up a framework so that the people misinform themselves as subsequent events unfold. That's the beauty of the "bear in the woods" ad and other kinds of soft propaganda. The target does all your work for you -- he convinces himself. You just set up a channel for his thinking.

The Russian people are already pretty paranoid about the West because of our "investor" predations during the post-collapse period and they've always been terrified of being encircled (the Warsaw Pact countries were less slave production centers than slave buffer states). It sounds ludicrous to us that anybody would believe NATO would attack Russia, but I'll bet it doesn't sound crazy at all to a typical Russian.

In Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising those godless communists did just that.

The battle on the frozen lake at the end of that movie (against the Teutonic Knights with the silly hats) is the coolest war scene in any movie, ever.

Apparently living in Gaza under Hamas is no different than living in a cult environment, or at least says someone who escaped from their mind control....

Israel is getting accolades for its war against Hamas from a very unlikely quarter — the son of the terror group’s co-founder.

“Israel in the Middle East is fighting on behalf of the free world,” declared Mosab Hassan Yousef, the outspoken son of Hamas leader Hassan Yousef.

The younger Yousef long ago abandoned his father’s twisted ideology .... Yousef said Hamas can’t be trusted and doesn’t care about how many lives are lost in pursuit of its goal to build a radical Islamic state.

“Hamas does not care about the lives of Palestinians, or the lives of Israelis, or Americans; they don’t care about their own lives,” Yousef told CNN in a recent interview. “They consider dying for their ideology a way of worship.”

He rejected Hamas and converted to Christianity despite being raised to become a violent militant....“Their goal is to conquer the globe and build an Islamic state on every inch of the globe,” he told the website The Right Scoop. “[Hamas] is willing to sacrifice as many Palestinian lives as it takes.”

In the CNN interview, he blasted the militants battling Israel in Gaza for their stated goal of establishing an Islamic caliphate — a goal shared by the Sunni extremists fighting in Syria and Iraq.

“Hamas is not seeking co-existence and compromise. Hamas is seeking conquest and taking over. And by the way, the destruction of the State of Israel is not Hamas’s final destination,” he said. “Hamas’s final destination is building the Islamic caliphate, which means an Islamic state under rubble of every other civilization.”

Yousef, who won asylum to live in the US in 2010, said he had been brainwashed as a child to give up everything for the terrorists’ cause.

This article describes reaction throughout the Arab world to the conflict between Hamas and Israel:

Although there is great sympathy for the sufferings of Palestinians, in most Muslim countries there is little support for Hamas with its tactic of provoking Israel by firing rockets at civilian targets.

The author then proceeds to supply a wide variety of quotes from various Arab sources.

Amazing though it might sound, hatred for Jews, thinly disguised as opposition to Israel, appeared to be more intense in Western capitals than anywhere in the Muslim world.

It sounds like, in the Arab world, when it comes to Israell, "the enemy of my enemy, if not my friend, is not my enemy either." The Arabs seem to fear Iran more than they loathe Israel right now, and the Iranians apparently are annoyed with Hamas for tossing them aside several years ago.
