Other than Cheney I think everybody always knew the war would cost the US taxpayer trillions with no upside.

I was referring to the argument that the war could not be a deliberate strategy to make money because the overall effect was a net loss. This is the equivalent of saying nobody would ever break into a house to steal a stereo because at the end of the day there is no net gain to the neighborhood: the stereo is a wash.

This war was a con designed so that a few Americans could steal a ton of other Americans' stereos. War is great for this, because people will weep and wave flags and BEG for their stereos to be stolen. They'll even let their kids be maimed and murdered for the privilege. And the person who points out it's a con? He's the traitor.

There have always been war profiteers of various sorts. An unseemly business, but one that can be quite lucrative if you manipulate things to your advantage.

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the assassination that started the first World War. History channel is highlighting the occasion by showing a marathon of Swamp People.

The BBC is posting coverage on its website as events would have unfolded. It drives home the realization that if the web had existed a century ago the entire war would have been averted.

BTW, the BBC Proms is doing a special program on August 4 (4:15 PM ET - BBC 3) with a commemoration when Britain declared war at 11 PM GMT.
