  • Re: World Soccer XXV - the run up to the World Cup

    It begins tomorrow.

I'll take a win and 2 competitive other matches as minimum requirement for US this time around.

Optimist! I had imagined a scenario in which Team USA gets 5 points and finishes third.

(everyone beats Ghana and ties everyone else, and we lose out on goal differential.)

In case there's any newcomers to the thread or perhaps you've missed it, there's a couple games we have going for the WC.

ESPN World Cup Bracket Predictor- Pick who finishes first and second in each group, and from there it's like any ol' March Madness pool.

ESPN World Cup Pick 'Em- Pick each individual game. Check back in after each round to pick the next round's slate of games.

Both are USCHO, both passwords are hockey.

You're a bigger optimist than me. I only see 1 or 2 points for the US. Ghana has our number. Ronaldo may be back and Germany is well... Germany.

Let's not forget on our best days we beat Spain and nearly took down Brazil. So they have it in them!

Can you believe how close we were to never getting to see either of those games ever happen? USA lost their first 2 Confed Cup games and only made it to the knockout round after crushing Egypt 3-0 while Brazil crushed Italy 3-0 to allow the US to win the the tiebreaker on GF. That USA/Egypt - Brazil/Italy simultaneous thing was amazing to watch unfold.

You know I knew Chuck Blazer and Jack Warner were unethical people but I had no idea just how bad Blazer was...

Was listening to Soccer Morning and they talked about how despite him being such a sleazeball, USA Soccer wouldn't be where it is without his efforts to grow CONCACAF and force inclusion of the US team.

Blazer is a mixed bag. He was a corrupt, philandering *hole (Mr. Ten Percent) but he did some good for US Soccer. He got MLS their first paying contract with ESPN for example.

I believe (and hope Klinsi has the team also believing) that this is a load of crap. There's been huge turnover in both teams since 2010 (15 new players in the Ghanaian squad, 16 in the USA squad) and almost no players left who were involved in that 2006 match (just Asamoah Gyan, Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari, Howard, Beasley and Dempsey still in the squads, of whom only Essien, Beasley and Dempsey actually played in 2006). Two matches, one four years ago and one eight years ago, aren't nearly enough to establish any kind of a pattern.

And, like I said, hopefully this is exactly what Klinsmann is telling the team. There's no reason they should be "in our heads".

Not to mention, I thought I had heard that no team had ever lost to the same team in 3 straight world cups...

i know it's a safe pick to make (and i certainly won't be rooting for them), but i'm having a hard time seeing anyone but brazil winning this thing. might not be the best in a neutral setting but as the host? i think it's theirs.

What in the H is that POS article? This article does not tell me the number of reasons why he's Mr. Ten Percent. Where's the recylced gifs to accompany the reasons? Where's the 20 reasons where #1-19 are disparaging and meant to knock him down but #20 says it's all ok because he's resilient and knows he's awesome despite 1-19?

Are you telling me there's a Buzzfeed outside of lists about Disney and girls insecurities that they perpetually share on Facebook?

Nate Silver's 538 blog (now on ESPN) gives Brazil a 45% chance of winning the whole thing....which also suggests that there is a 55% chance that some other team will win.

Argentina 13%, Germany 11%, Spain 8%, Chile and France 4%, Colombia 3%, Belgium England France 2%, everyone else < 1%.
