Was ANY long-term NHL contract a good idea?

Unless the new ownership rejects what they approved. However, the way the league has carefully vetted perspective owners to ensure a Phoenix-minded buyer is in line, it seems unlikely that would happen.

All the more reason for him to sign and then the team get shipped to Seattle.

On another note, what are some of these players smoking? Clarkson reportedly wants 7 yrs/$6m. Detroit is letting Flippula walk because he wants $5m/yr off the back of one very good outlying season in '11-'12, despite following that up with arguably his worst campaign as a Wing this year. Funny how some thought bringing the cap down would put an end to overpayment of fringe second liners having one breakout year.

And compliance buyouts end after next season.

Unless the Cap goes up, up & up, the Penguins have a lot of money tied up in 3 skaters.

EDIT: The usual TSN twitters have Lecavalier to the Flyers 5 @ $4.5 per
