This was exactly my point. Same goes for Jefferson or Jackson...they are both considered "Democrats," yet there is no way in the world that they would be Democrats today.

Whoever this nut is, he's actually right, it is a socialist policy for the government to essentially set the price of a good. However, it's a very justifiable one in this case. In true capitalism, the limited number of gas stations that can operate would be able to jack up prices according to demand. Which is why the United States is not a true capitalist society.

Sadly, I doubt JFK would be considered a Democrat today either:

            > encouraged volunteer activity, not compulsory

I'm not sure why you'd be sad about that, but keep in mind that Kennedy cut the top marginal rate to...70%. I'm not so sure he'd be seen as a republican today...but he certainly wasn't a hyper-liberal, and certainly was not as liberal as Teddy Kennedy.

Maybe, but I'd bet he would be a Democrat now regardless. Agree though that both parties are vastly different.

How is this any different than Democrats complaining about the Republicans and the Wall Street lobby? Or the religious right?

If he had said the fa***t lobby, I'd have a problem with it.

Another wow moment. The Republicans are up in Indiana 2 with 82% reporting (47-49), a seat that was expected to easily go to the Dems. They also picked up a seat in Kentucky 6. A seat that was expected to go to the Dems in a relatively close race.

Down from 90 -- a 22% cut in the rates. When JFK died, Teddy would probably be considered a 2012 Republican. He put his finger to the wind, saw which way it was blowing and moved accordingly to secure his lifetime seat.

The nominal rate was 70%, but the effective rate was still near what we pay today. The reason for this? Tax deductions. Back then, you could take deductions for rug purchases, pet parakeet feather trimmings appointments, and whatever else there might be. When Reagan cut the top marginal rate to 25% he had removed the deductions, creating only a small effective rate cut. Basically, he made the tax code simpler and we've been mucking with it ever since in the name of special interest lobbies, keeping it roughly the same while increasing the nominal top marginal rate to 36%.

Wow. MSNBC is almost unanimously criticizing Warren for attempting to give a victory speech before Brown's concession speech. Very bizarre sight.
