As much as people may like the thought of a 3rd party, I'm not sure people like Gary "lets get stoned to the bejeezus" Johnson are the answer. It would have to be a credible nominee with mainstream ideas in a variety of subjects who was also well funded. In my lifetime, Ross Perot was the only candidate to accomplish this. The only way I can see this working is if a sitting officeholder got a likeminded block to start their own party (say Yankee Republicans or Tea Partiers or Blue Dog Democrats). Then they could have sway if they controlled a portion of votes in the Congress, sorta along the lines of how Kadima came about over in Israel.

But at least it'd be a major step in the right direction.
Probably the reason they wouldn't like it is because it is staunch fiscal conservatism. Tightening the purse strings, as it were. Also, it's not abolishing the fed so much as it is auditing the fed and removing the plausible deniability by inserting some cheques and balances. Not everyone is in agreement with Ron Paul's ideas, but there are some decent ones such as "FairTax" and Herman Cain's 9-9-9 plan; I don't know how crazy I am about that but is a compromise between FairTax and the current system. If there's one thing I've noticed, though, it's that GenY really is not very greedy of a generation at all, and the primary focus has been paying for their parents' (i.e. the baby boomers) mistakes. I think we're also a very Jerry Springer motivated generation in which we desire freedom and feel caged up by the older generations. Perhaps that's another reason why we're enticed by the Libertarian party, because it's the closest thing to the American dream that our Founding Fathers created.

OK, you're going to have to explain what you mean by libertarian left/right. That makes no sense whatsoever.

The obvious group would be southern conservatives. They've been voting as a distinctive bloc since the Founding, and they already self-ID as a nation within a nation. The new party could even use the stupid stars and bars as their symbol.

It would also serve as a first step towards a regional separatist movement, which would be the best thing to happen to the rest of the country.

Great article covering the bases of why Romney would make the "47% of the country are freeloaders" statement and what's inside the far right psyche that lets them disproportionately take government money with one hand while shaking the other fist about "dependency."

We can let them go now, I guess. Letting them go in 1860 inevitably leads us to fighting the First World War on the German side while the south sucked up to the French and British and about 5-10x the number of casualties for the same eventual result (Confederate defeat and capitulation) as 1861-65 did.

Within one generation the CSA will be back to the 15th century. Nobody's going to have to nuke them; they'll be doing R&D on the flintlock.

So the voting coalition Romney seems to be shooting for is crabby old rich white guy social conservatives plus a smattering of young males who aren't getting laid? I think those are the only groups he hasn't offended or outright dismissed.

If the Mittwit ends up losing the election, a lot of people will point to this videotape I'm sure as the "turning point". Personally I think it was the Clinton convention speech that was the beginning of the end. In particular he made two key points: 1) You are better off than you were 4 years ago (800K jobs lost per month vs 100K gained now). 2) Republicans caused the problem and because Obama hasn't had enough time to fix their mess, they want to be put in charge again.

Dems were their usual befuddled self until Clinton framed issue #1 for them. Immediately they ginned up ads with the same argument, while Romney pivoted away from a solely economic focus. The 2nd issue was even more salient. Simply put it was who do you trust to run the economy, Bush policies or Clinton ones? Democratic policies vs Republican ones. This is the core of Romney's problems, even beyond his own unlikeability. People in no way, shape, or form think a 3rd GWB term served by Mittens will improve anything, from the economy to foreign policy. The Republican brand is as toxic as Old Pio's underwear (so I hear) and about as fun to be around.
