Does someone have a squeegee? Chris Matthews just blew his load all over my TV screen after that speech. (Despite it being the same speech that Christie gave.)

                    The best of Day One:

Edward Kennedy Tribute: Debate footage was a dagger to Romney's heart; very effective rallying of the base for Obama's first term achievements and call to protect and build on liberal ideals. It will get lost in the response to the First Lady, but it was a strong rebuke to the GOP. Just from a purely technical POV it was the best use of video at any convention.

Tammy Duckworth: Great speaker for veterans and veterans' health issues. (We have friends who have worked with her so we have some insider knowledge. She's my favorite kind of politician -- she knows she's there to marshal public support and spearhead at a high level but she leaves the technical details to people who have detailed knowledge and experience. IMHO she would be much better as an executive, not a legislator.)

Michelle Obama: Stole the night for most people; closed the personal case for how Obama's policies and instincts are much better for the future.

Lincoln Chafee: Made the intellectual argument for independents and real conservatives to support Obama, or at the least oppose the monstrosity the GOP has become. Basically a smart version of what Zell Miller did in 2004.

Stacey Lihn: Again, this deserved more attention than it will get, but an incredibly moving and effective anecdotal story of what the Affordable Care Act means for patients, and what the impact of its mindless repeal for political purposes would be. Devastating attack on the vindictiveness and stupidity of the "destroy Obama at any cost" mindset on the far right.

Julián Castro: Good national debut; resonant American Dream family story. Certainly somebody to keep an eye on in Texas.

Given the relative disappointment of the RNC, I don't think the Dems have to replicate the Clinton '92 convention this time around. Speaking of which, has there in recent memory ever been a former President with the popularity of Clinton that could still be a big draw years after he was in office? Obviously Reagan was popular but I don't think he made a lot of public appearances as he got further away from his time in office due to his illness (not sure if he spoke at the '92 GOP convention. Know he wasn't there in '96). Other than that, Bush II, Bush I, Carter, Ford, Nixon, LBJ, and Truman were all unpopular when they finished their terms. Maybe Eisenhower?

I thought the night was not great but quite good for the dems.

As I mentioned yesterday, Duckworth was great. Going in, I would have thought it would be a bit much. But in hindsight, I thought it was awesome and maybe the best of the night. Although I heard different analysts call M Obama, Patrick and Emanuel each the best of the night.

M Obama got double the number of tweets that Romney got during his speech. The Obama's are one of the best speaking couples this country has seen.

The funny thing is, all those speechwriters hang out and drink with each other. It's the same level of ability (hell, they are essentially the same people, the right wing ones just have richer friends) -- the Democratic argument is just much more coherent and positive this time around. The Republican message is both obsolete (let's try Trickle Down again!) and vile (people who think the way we do are Americans. The other 75% of the country are scary godless commie gay slutty turrists!)

The Republicans are in the same position that the Democrats were in 1984. Their rhetoric is destructive, their ideas are exhausted, and their leaders are impotent. Against them is a savvy politician who can speak to what is best in the American character.

When Nixon left office following his resignation, he was the only former President still alive. Eisenhower made it to 1969, but I don't know if he spoke at 64 or 68.

I have heard that. But, I also heard that Romney had total control over the content of his speech and wrote most of it himself. And it showed.
