Was that me? I did confirm.

No, we have 4 mutual friends, all from here.

Nope, a girl I played hockey with about 10 years ago. Very odd.

I'm sure there's some sort of algorithm that goes from you to Friend A, to Friend B, to Friend C (and B and C don't know you, but C knows B and B knows A) and then Friend D who you happen to know.
Never really developed a taste for tequila. Kind of hard to understand how you make a drink out of something that sharp, inhospitable. Now, bourbon is easy to understand.

It's got to be something like that, but it also takes other factors like work, school, activities, check-ins, etc... I went to a very large high school (Freshmen/sophmore year my class was ~1300 kids before the school split into two seperate schools for Junior/Senior year) and I always see people from high school on there... I have a core group of 5-6 people that I still talk to on a regular basis, but that's really it from HS... I don't even have any casual acquaintances for the most part... Yet Facebook is always throwing some name that I haven't seen in 10 years at me under the People You May Know column...

Didn't go to school with her, and I don't list any work info. The only plausible answer is some sort of witchcraft.

So, this week I got upgraded to a new PC at work, and switched from Windows XP to Windows 8. For the past couple of days I've been having a problem with Internet access. The computer will lose Internet connectivity for like half a minute or so, and when it comes back, everything will be back to normal except that I'll be unable to access Gmail, and instead will get a "server not found" error. (Occasionally Facebook is also affected.) This happens regardless of which browser I'm using - Firefox, Chrome, IE all the same. All other sites work as normal. Outlook accesses our Exchange server normally. Rebooting my system fixes the problem temporarily, but nothing else I've tried (releasing and renewing my IP address, clearing cookies or browser cache, turning off the Norton firewall, etc.) works. I updated my drivers but this does not solve the problem. Anyone have any idea what the issue here might be?

Did you unplug and plug in your computer? Have you tried restarting your computer? Are all the cables securely fastened?

If none of these work, I can transfer you to a Techie to help you with your issue.

Does the failure inform you that there's a proxy issue of some sort when trying to access either of those sites?

No, nothing about a proxy. It looks like this error message, except it says "mail.google.com" rather than "www.google.com". All other Google services that I've tried (search, calendar, drive) still work normally.

You could throw it down a flight of stairs and call IT and tell them it doesn't work anymore.

It's a tiny little Lenovo ThinkCentre, so it wouldn't actually even be that much effort to toss it down the stairs.

Heh. The flaw here is that we don't have an IT department at my law firm, just one partner who handles IT in addition to his other work, and he's not here today (and I would guess won't be here tomorrow either) and I'd rather not leave myself without a functional computer until Monday.
