Amazon likely just lost thousands of customers here in CT since as of today they are charging sales tax on all purchases. Unless the sell price is incredibly low, there's no advantage to buying from them.

Here too, but I find their prices are still lower than most places for the kind of stuff I buy from them.

The federal government is forcing all internet retailers to collect state & local sales taxes now. I want to say the law was passed during the spring. Amazon has been collecting it for a couple months now here, but it's not on 100% of the purchases made and I've yet to suss out a pattern.

I haven't ponied up for it, but my sister says it's been a godsend since she had her daughter last year. For things like diapers or wipes or whatever, she can order a month's worth of something at a time, and she and my brother-in-law don't have to deal with lugging it home from the store.

This. Prime's two-day shipping is awesome, and way more convenient that going to the store, assuming you can wait two days. There's also a subscribe-and-save feature (I don't think you even need prime for it) so you can schedule deliveries of diapers and wipes (or dog food, cat food, etc) on a regular basis, at a discount.

For me, Prime pays for itself during the holidays. Two-day shipping for pretty much anything I want and I don't have to fight the crowds at the mall? Sold.

This was a highly publicized voluntary action on Amazon's part. The state had been pressing them because of their affiliate program, claiming that the in-state affiliates meant they had a physical presence and therefore were required to collect the tax. Amazon terminated all those affiliates back in the spring and they worked out some deal where Amazon will get significant tax breaks for building a $50 million distribution center here in the next couple of years, and Amazon starts collecting the sales tax now. According to the local news this morning, the state estimates it will see $25-30 million per year in tax revenue just from Amazon.

The law I was mentioning is, it turns out to be, a bill. The news I read before was about it passing the Senate, but it failed in the House.

Honestly, Amazon will go the McDonald's route. They sell SO MUCH, that they will make a slight profit on stuff, but volume will make up for it.
Never really developed a taste for tequila. Kind of hard to understand how you make a drink out of something that sharp, inhospitable. Now, bourbon is easy to understand.

Agreed, I think the convenience is just too great for most. Especially with the continuing decline of 'brick & mortar" bookstores, and Amazon's vast selection.
