When we left the old thread, we were all astonished by the HS principal with "issues" who is threatening to ban students who particpated in an "unauthorized" bike ride from graduation. How about giving her a hairnet and a slotted spoon?

Personally, I would have added, "Hey Teacher, Leave those kids alone!" to the thread title as well. Just sayin...

That happened near me! That school isn't backwoods rural, but it's rural enough that no one should be biking to school. Nonetheless, it had both a mayor and police escort, and therefore should not be considered as putting themselves at risk. In fact, it should be celebrated for kids being active. It made others late? Oh noes! maybe we should suspend ice and snow too!

I guess I was going for continuity. Besides, Priceless is the king of thread titles.

True, I was just kicking around the idea of doing it myself.

On top of getting dismissed from school, the Kenowa Hills principal also made them miss final exams that will have to be made up at a later date. So, it's not ok for the buses to be 10 minutes late but it's definitely ok to force students to miss exams.

The superintendent said they will not be stopping anyone from walking and will allow the seniors that missed the "walk-through" to do it next week. The school board meeting tonight had so many attendees that it had to be delayed so it could be relocated to the middle school. Oddly enough the principal was not in attendance.

And it is apparently OK to pile more work on the poor, underpaid teachers, making them write and proctor another exam.

So two days into probation on some undisclosed alcohol-related charge, which probation involved laying off the sauce, this woman gets liquored up, gets behind the wheel of her truck, causes a car accident, flees, causes another accident while fleeing, in which she kills the driver and injures his sister and his daughter, flees again, drives into a reservoir, swims away, gets pulled into a boat by some good Samaritans, begs them not to call the cops, sees them signaling to some cops onshore that they have the person they're looking for, tries to jump out of the boat to swim away again.

Serious props to the criminal defense attorney who managed to get the DA to NOT file murder charges (not stating an opinion on the rightness, just saying impressive legal work), but the sundry charges they did throw at her netted her 33 years.

                        Terrible.

Stories like this always make me wonder why some drunks are the quiet type, whereas the ones who end up making the news and killing people are the type who seem to act like they're on crystal or PCP when drunk.

Too many of us have an idea in our heads that "that could be me," after the company Christmas party or baby shower or whatever, getting into big trouble with a DWI. In fact, my understanding is there are people out there who drive waaay drunk, all the time. They are hard core alcoholics, and we should do everything possible to get them off the streets, permanently. No breath inter-lock systems, no driving only to and from work, nothing. Take a cab or bum a ride or walk. And any judge who goes easy on drunks shouldn't be retained or reelected.

Several years ago a lady nearly plowed into my brother's car in Phoenix. He was able to apply the brakes in time to avoid getting T-boned. My mother, brother, sister-in-law and I all would have likely been severely injured or worse. This was like on Wednesday night during Christmas week, around 11PM, and she was already double drunk and heading home. And not caught DWI for the first time, either. Years ago in Phoenix, long before our awareness of DWI was raised by MADD and others, if you got ticketed for DWI and convicted, you went to jail for a night. Period. The then mayor of Phoenix, Margaret Hance, took the punishment and used it as a "teachable moment" (how I hate that term). And lots of jurisdictions have instituted that kind of shock therapy for first offenders, too. You can make a mistake and get caught DWI the first time. Only a hopeless drunk gets caught multiple times, period.

I've always believed booze reveals the true, inner person. You show me somebody who wants to sing and hug and tell stories when they've had a few, I'll show you an ordinary decent guy. You show me somebody who acts like a belligerant a*shole when he's had too much to drink, and I'll show you a belligerant a*shole.

When I was living in VT, there was a cruel-and-unusual punishment case working its way through the appeals process. Upon the guy's 20+th conviction for drunk driving (without a license), the trial judge ordered him to move to a house/apartment within walking distance of a liquor store, on the basis that in his (the judge's) opinion, the guy literally could not otherwise prevent himself from driving drunk. I never did hear what the final outcome was, but the judge's opinion made a lot of sense to me.
If you don't change the world today, how can it be any better tomorrow?
