Re: Detroit Tigers, Volume 3 - The Alan Trammell version

Nice, timely hitting by Cabrera today, JV is at 4 - 1, and we're back at .500 at 17 - 17.

    On this day in 2011:

May 13: Making a bid to become the second pitcher in major league history to throw back-to-back no-hitters, Justin Verlander blanked the Kansas City Royals on no hits through 5.2 innings, before surrendering a triple to Melky Cabrera. The Tigers would go on to win their sixth straight, 3-1.

    The Tigers were 21 - 18.

On May 21st they fell below .500 for the last time at 22 - 23.

    So...
NMU Hockey Since 1976 ...there at the beginning.

Bill Crawford, LSSU radio announcer, on NMU hockey: "This is their MO right to the tee: get out shot, get out played, keep hangin' in there, just rope-a-dope it in your own zone, get it up the ice, bang it in and win the game."

Apparently Verlander had a callous on his thumb that started to bleed. That's why he didn't start the 8th.

If Cabrera doesn't reach here, Jimmy's getting tossed. We took that call right in the pooper.

I'm amazed Marlboro Jimmy is still in the game. That cost us at least one run.

Selig needs to institute an appeal rule for managers so that the umpires actually get together and talk. These guys are too proud to admit they're wrong and ask for help, there needs to be something put in place so managers can make sure they get together.

But Selig won't do anything, so we'll have to wait until he's dead or retired.

Well, keep in mind that you've got to clear the particulars with both the players' and umpires' unions.

5-2 lead turns into this. Now we get to stick our dicks in the electric socket.

6-5 CWS. Yay. Let's leave some more runners on and give up another moon shot to Dunn.

We're blowing a golden opportunity to grab hold of this division. If we come up a couple games short at the end, this month will be why.

File this post away for later reference. I just hope we don't have to re-visit this.

All right, Valverde. We came back from 6 down. Let's not gag this one up.

                      Please?

                        And away we go...

So, we come back and win today, that's good. Max gives up 6 on 8, yikes!

About last night: several guys in the office this morning were bemoaning (and calling for his head) Jimmy-smokes' decision to pull Smyly and go with Putkonen. After that happened, I guess it was disaster (I didn't watch or listen to the game).

But it got me thinking: Would Jimmy-Marlboro-man have made the same decision during a late season playoff-spot race or a playoff game? I don't think so.

I think he didn't want Smyly to get in anymore trouble and said to himself: "Let's see if Putkonen is capable of coming in here and shutting things down--even with his terrible ERA. Maybe he can help us down the line if he performs tonight." Then Putkonen mucks things up. Bad decision, won't use him again, at least not in that kind of situation. Then Below and Dotel come in and do OK.

My point is, these are early season moves, testing the waters, and something I don't think J-smokes would do further into the season.

Unlike the guys in my office, I guess, I still have some faith in Jim Leyland.

                              What do you all think?

Smyly was about this close to getting bombed. I was thankful he made it as long as he did.

I'd give Jimmy a C- so far this year.
